Speaking of horse butts…
Hard to tell from your photos. Can you post a non-close up pic of the leather. Also the shape of what you bought may be helpful too. Most horsehide sold comes in just a few distinct shapes, oval shells, horse "butts" and horse fronts (usually very thin).

In my experience most horse fronts have been chrome tanned which may make them look a bit different and they are typically used for garments. Old A2 Army flight jackets were typically horsehide at the very start of WWII, later goatskin and cowhide.
 
then ... is not horse leather?
the boy who sold them wondered just what size I want and if it's ok 60x7 cm
