Leap Year Sabbatical

@GaryTha

I have seen that. I just can't get by with a single pass shave. Mine grows back too fast for me and for work specifications. I do plan, to take my main blade brands and see just how far they can go. I'm only going to concentrate on the ones in my journal that I at least get a week out of.

I may end up there with you. lol.

Regardless of the type of beard, I notice most people work their way up to at least 80 shaves/blade. There are a few exceptions. The real benefit is improving shave quality and comfort through improved technique. The number of shaves is a byproduct of this goal.

My technique has definitely improved which is leading me to seeing how far these blades can go that work well in my slant.

@GaryTha, would buying a years worth of soap when current stock is depleted be within the rules? This is where I want to get to personally but that would entail buying around 4 pucks for a year. I would like to buy the whole year at once to take advantage of sales or even free shipping if possible.

Sure. I think I even stated you can take advantage of reasonable volume discounts. For the 2020 annual Sabbatical, you can list soap as your exception and catch the sales.

Thank you. I have about 4 years worth of soaps now. Lol.

Well as promised here are pictures of my entire kit. I wasn't sure if witch hazel was restock-able so i pre-bought for the next 4 years. The bottle on the right is my current which has lasted nearly 2 years. The razors are my new daily driver (Homelike START,) my old daily driver (Van Der Hagen) and my travel razor (58 Gillette Tech.) i do have a 28 Gillette Tuckaway but that’s getting PIF’d shortly. For lather products i have a puck of Haslinger which is currently in use, an Arko stick for traveling, GIS Barber cream and a can of Proraso. I’ll only restock once all 4 are gone despite the Arko having been used for travel only in the past. The blades are a mix of two massive samplers comprising 2 of every blade razorsbladesclub and tryablade offer (no duplicates.) There are also some random tucks in there that i had or threw in to get free shipping. The preshave is Grooming Department and the blade bank is Feather. Brushes are my travel, an Omega Boar, a Yaqui synthetic and my cheap Fento badger. The aftershaves are my one area of AD weakness and none will be replaced if they end up running out (per the rules.) So that’s it! Full shave kit posted up. If something runs out i’ll post a picture and an update but otherwise i’m starting this now (why wait?!) Thanks to @GaryTha for the idea and making the rules and best of luck to all participating!

@Macduff , those stacks of blades (the samplers) look wild!

Alphabetically sorted. This is what I call downright dedication.
Last time I’ve seen that it was LPs collection before it was rearranged by the date of purchase.

@Macduff,
Your den looks great. I could easily get an aftershave addiction. Thanks for the pictures.

Thanks @GaryTha! My current collection has pretty much reached critical mass and i was already considering a sabbatical before you came up with the leap year idea and it pushed me to go forward with it. I honestly have so much choice now any more would just become overkill. Very glad to be taking part in this!

@RTM thank you i try! There were about 160 different brands and i did it to make sure i actually got all of them. With two different orders from two different sites it took a bit of time to get them organized. Add to that the fact that i’ve already used about 35 different brands and had to weed those out (because the tryablade sampler gives you all the blades on the whole website) and it took a decent amount of time to do. But it’s done now and by my calculations the sampler, not counting the extra tucks, should last me about 5 1/4 years. So i’m well prepared for this sabbatical!

Ditto! I doubt no one but a museum curator has that many. Impressed!

Thanks guys! I’m on a quest to try every non-vintage blade available in the US so i took advantage of razorbladesclub and tryablade to attempt getting them all. Should be quite the journey!

I think there should be a separate dedicated thread for Leap Sabbatical pics. Pictures taken at the very beginning, at set intervals, and finally at the end for those who will get there. Plus SOTD if someone feels like it. Since @Macduff was the first to post his pics I believe the honor of starting dedicated photo thread should be his.
I'll post mine by the end of December, I will have to buy an alum and some blades before 2020 sabbatical. Have yet done any shopping.

I still haven't decided which strategy to use.
  1. Desert island (A): Buy everything for 10 years. That would cost about $32 for soap and blades.
  2. Desert island (B): Same as above but buy an extra razor. Cost about $70.
  3. Buy upon need: Minimalist set. Cost - nothing for a year, then about $4 a year for soap. No new blades needed.
In my case, SOTD could be the shave of the decade. I think a designated picture thread would end up mixed with posts, and we'd have two threads. I'd prefer to keep one.

Here’s my starting gear. Soap and aftershave for years. 4 years at least off blades. I didn’t included the razors that will be leaving soon. I should get easily through the leap year without needing anything.

Looks like you are set for four years. I love the cabinet. It needs a pinup on the inside. Be careful not to buy anything to do with shaving or you will be out of the 2019 Sabbatical.

2019 is in the bag. I won’t get anything until the restock.
