Lead wedge in my Bengall straight

I have what I assume to be is a very old Bengall straight razor, the reason I assume this is that the wedge is made of lead although I am not an expert so it is very possible I am wrong about how old it is... the razor has no jimps so I am not sure if they were never put on or if they were ground off later. on one side of the tang it says Bengall and the floral design that I think is common on the bengall, the other side also has the floral design but nothing else... On the blade the words.. "IMPORTED BY C.J. LAWSON NEWBURGH" . I have some photos here to show what I am talking about. Any information about this razor would be much appreciated.

The older razors used to always have a piece of metal at the end of the scales like in the last pictures. I'm unsure if some manifacturers are making their razors with metal or plastic only today.

The Bengall looks nice!

Thank you sir Luc, This razor and both of my J.A. Henckels I traded some guy some useless junk to for all 3 of them  I think I got the better deal   two of the razors need some TLC but one of the J.A. Henckels is in extremely good condition :biggrin1: All 3 do need to be honed to be usable for shaving  I also need to get a good strop ... the one I have has seen better days. (not my fault)

While the wedge may, indeed, be pewter, I think it would have the be the high-lead content stuff for it to be so. I think I'd go with just plain old lead because these wedges can be practically be bent in half with just your fingers. Regardless, it does have some lead in it, so just don't lick the soap off the butt. Hmm... I'm not quite sure if that sounded right...

   Never Never will I lick anything off any butt ...... hummmm welll maybe chocolate syrup off of..... ummmm never mind.. don't need to go there, this is a shaving forum :tongue_sm

As for the wedge... I am fairly sure it is lead.. I can easily make marks in it with my fingernail using very light pressure.

If I thought this razor had much value I might consider trading it for either a strop or for work I need done on my J.A. Henckels razors. but I never have that much luck so I will just have to save my pennies and maybe someday I can buy the strop and have the work on my razors done. I of course would get the strop from Ambrose and there is only one person I am fully confident in to work on my razors and that is the master himself :biggrin1: Bill
