I will always pair aftershaves up with a fragrance. Unless the aftershave is potent, it just burns off soon anyhow. I like trying different combinations.
Layering Colognes on top of Aftershaves

I use AS much more frequently than cologne, but have tried a few pairings whose notes match up well:
Afta and Truefitt & Hill Grafton, both having fruity/powdery/barbershop scents in them
Gillette Cool Wave and Drakkar Noir or Davidoff Cool Water
When I wear both AS & cologne, I want them to pair up well with each other.

Today's pairing was quite nice. 
Aftershave: Clubman Osage Rub
Cologne: Pinaud Clubman Lime Sec
Aftershave: Clubman Osage Rub

I love to try different combinations. Only if an aftershave scent lasts a very long time will I skip the edt.
I use Old Spice. Cologne over Old Soice AS and Tabc cologne over Tabac AS. never considered mixing scents though.
