wow just wow, this was a LOT for a 1905 run of the mill or been through the mill double ring. I am happy for the appreciation for my current double rings but I can't help but think this sale rode on the back of the non serial numbered model. I would have thought $225.00 max and expected $170.00 ish but congrats to the owner if it is their first. Certainly a great razor to collect over some toggle. :tongue_sm

I contacted the seller and asked them for further inspection and found the serial number to be 10622 putting it at 1904. I currently have 4 double rings but all are 1905's so this 1904 would have been a nice addition to the 5's. Unfortunately I lost.

I did too and the reply is below - there is another digit he could not read making it a 1905

Dear XXXXXX,

very very faint and it may not all be there- i see 106 and then a space and 22 but there could be more to it (it's faint)

shavefreak I respect your opinion on many things, but I'm afraid your have crossed a line in the shave cream......:001_smile

Yeah well the ribbon is nice and if someone needed a return envelope to complete a set it might be worth it, you don't see many books and inspection tickets anymore. There could be one of those as a bonus in there.

Heck I just paid $100.00 for a beat on Kampfe tin but the razor was nice and it had the original instructions and original ad for a stropper that the razor was wrapped in from the late 1800's. so.....

Glad I didn't win that one then. Who needs 5 of the same year:lol:

ha ha I am just teasing cause I can't find a toggle at a reasonable price to save my life. I will never ever admit they are worth the money they are going for but I do and will get one some day.

I was watching it and it was at $43 for the longest time, I thought about bidding but wouldn't have won it.

May the shaving Gods forgive you for this blasphemy...

Could be some interesting original goodies behind that ribbon; thats likely the price driver.

What is writen on the paper behind the ribbon is:

For
Gillette Safety Razor Co., 304 Atlantic Ave. Boston, Mass.

From............................................................................

Use this envelope to return used blades. Place stamp on other side.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is so special about these double rings that makes them sell at such prices?

These are the first Gillettes mass produced. They are rare and highly valued for that reason and for the historical importance.

The most interesting thing about that eBay sale is that the seller had no idea what this was and must have felt like he was struck by Alex's lightening cloud for receiving over $300 for a dirty old razor.
