What's new

Latest Antique Shop Hauls

Still had some Christmas bonus burning a hole in my pocket so last weekend was my chance to run out to some antique shops out of my normal area.
Hit several in the Aurora/Naperville and after burning through half a tank of gas pretty much came up bupkis.
Not to be denied Sunday meant a trip up to the Volo area and after working through 2 of the 3 malls and finding a 45.00 "four part Gillette"(known to us as a cracked handled, brassed up Old Type) and another case with 2 Slim Adjustable,a Blue Tip and a Slim Twist all extremely user grade for 45-50 each.
Nearing the last couple of booths in the last mall I spotted a NEW Red/Black case but noticed the 20.00 razor inside was not a NEW but a Goodwill and out of the corner of my eye spotted the Williams Mug Soap for 4.50. $good001.jpg

The razor has a very minor crack and the soap no longer smells too mentholish but considering there is a 09-1958 printed on the inner wrapper I not too surprised that the active menthol goodness has faded after just over 54 years and despite the snowy whiteness of the pic is a sort of tannish color.

Pretty much the Goodwill and the soap, the others were too pricey for what they actually were conditionwise.
Apparently I may have missed out on a few as the lady working checkout in the third mall said something about a lot of razors passing through that day.

I also went thrift shoppin for razors and the clerk gave me some heartbreaking news, she said she sold a lot of nice silver ones from a Estate sale.:behead::cryin::mad2::a13:

Someone on the "other" shaving forum is selling one of those for $20, looks good too.

i didn't take the offer because I'm not a fan of the gold finish.

I'da burnt gas for that one....

That's seems to be the most "pricey" Goodwill to get...WHEN you can locate one......

Good score......

You guys must have real nice thrift shops out Jersey way as most that I've hit in the Chicago area come up zipola but I do just love the clerks that just have to rub it in on what you missed :a6:.

tubenplate
Finish is real intact on the outside with any brassing on the insides of the head pieces most likely due to an old Super Blue blade (P-3 1970 IIRC) being left in it.
It still had one of the original Probak blades but since the blade was a rusty mess and had stained the wrap I blade banked both.

I can't tell you how many times I've been in antique/junk shops, and they ask "what are you looking for?"

And you tell them (like it matters)......

And they always say:

"Oh, I've had those, keep checking in with us"

I think it's a lie to make them look like they get stuff through all the time and to keep the hook in your nose, cause every time I fall for it an continue to go back and "check in".....

...it's always bupkus.

.

To be honest i have yet to find a true treasure in NJ. Through the years i have gotten them on the Bay, Etsy, various B&B members, a few other places but not in NJ......

Oh, yeah, and then the real pisser, one I'm dealing with right now....

The antique store owner has a nasty SS flair tip with the end caps unsoldered and missing, so I like a dummy ask to see it, and then he says,

"I have more....a whole box full of old razors. Where did you come from?"

I say "an hour away"

He says, "come back next week and I'll bring the box for you to look through"

So...I do.

No box.

He says he may bring it, and it has a bunch of those old ones in the litho tins (I think he meant nice old Lather Catchers, so I'm thinking cool...no telling what else)......

The he says, "or I think I'll just put them up on ebay".

Great. I drive a hour one way becuase he has the carrot on a stick in front of me, I fall for it, and even though he has a brick and mortar store taht's been there for years, he's going to snub me after leading me on and "just throw them on ebay".

Makes me want to not ever go in there again AND not bid on any of his fleabay stuff either.

Are you an antique store, or a cigarettes smoking office chair sitting 12 sandwhich eating ebayer?????

Just tell me next time so I don't drive 2 hours to hear that.....

Geesh.....

That beats my sad tale by many miles. I'm sorry to hear that bastard broke your heart, it would have been great to score one of those Litho tin /Se's, they are hard to find and much coveted by collectors abound.

Yeah, I know, Alex...thanks for the empathy.

BUT....I didn't burn a bridge...just kept my peace, and raelly, the place is right on the way to another shop where I left a nice prewar tech, slim adjustable, and some old USA straight....all cheap...I was just broke at the last visit.

SO.....on my way back through, I'll keep gently nudging him and see where it goes....

EVen though I am NOT PC, am very emotional and sometimes reactive, I'm learning when to keep my trap shut ("How about a nice big cup of shut the F*** up").....just in these situations.

You know, flies and honey and all that.

If he acts like an ***, that's his problem...if end up never seeing them, I'm not out anythign but whatever emotion or eye rolling I attach to it....

BUT, it illustrates the post fleabay world, and the current attitude of some antique dealers...which if I was an antique store owner, I would NEVER say things like to a customer as I would be thinking it would have the affect it had on me, and that I'd lose money by losing a customer....which if it werent' for my curiousity of what's in that box, I would not go back there.

SO...we'll see.

I'm not too lucky with in the wild finds. I've had like 3 really good ones in my life (not razors), but since I joined up and started this madness and have kept my eyes open for them now that I know what to look for, I have actually found a few things.

Generally, my neck of the woods stinks for antiques....this was a poor area in the prewar days and before, so no real good virgin stuff....but EVERYONE has to shave, so .....maybe that's the salvation to find some stuff. We'll see.

It sure seems like a TON of stuff comes out of Wisconsin....I keep noticing that on ebay. I'll have to educate my friend up there to keep an eye out up there for me.

Thanks for the commiseration, Alex....who knows, maybe I'll end up with a great Kampfe Bros in the tin and a bell tube Aristocrat for my holding my toungue...if nothing else it's providing me/us with a bit of suspense......LOL

Alex, do you ever get over to NYC???? I dont' know where in NJ you are, but there sure ought to be some stuff up in your neck of the woods somewhere.....Trenton? West Orange? Out in the countrier parts????

Just sayin'.....course, you prolly have to work for a living, which cuts down on razor hunting forays.......as we all know.

Chris, i travel to and other places nearby south NJ where i live ( Atlantic City area)....its just sucks up here for razors, maybe some day i get lucky. Last month my friends dad left 30 straight razors that i sold for him ( To Larry at Whipped Dog and other buyers). Then older freind passed away and left 10 NOS Schick razors which i sold here at BST. Nothing else since.
