What's new

late to the party, making up for lost time

in the meanwhile I also acquired a Lupo 58, as well as the DC baseplate. But sold both again. The 58 was a great shaver too, but it didn’t bring anything new for me compared to my other razors. Except some more bladefeel (though still remaining comfortable, but I just like less bladefeel. Hence I prefer the GC 68 over the Lupo 58.

I find the Lupo gives me a closer shave overall compared to the .68P, but that also comes with more alum block feedback. I'm still working on my technique with it, but I still return to the GC for the days where I need to let my face recover.

Excellent shave today. I used to have a bit of trouble with the Overlander when I just bought it. I currently have almost 30 shaves under the belt with it. While I had some trouble in the beginning to find my groove (let's say first 10 shaves or so), I must conclude now that the hype is real, at least for me. I have the version in brass, which I like (also have its brother the Karve CB in brass). It delivers absolutely effortless shaves, with hardly any uncomfortable blade feel (you do hear it when your shaving) and it leaves your face very smooth!

All in all very happy with this razor, and I am glad I didn't sell it too quickly like I have done with some others.

Karve - Overlander brass
Gillette - Perma-sharp stainless (5)
Frank Shaving - Pur-tech
Martin de Candre - Vétyver
Speick - Men AS
Balea - Men Ultra Sensitive ASB

There was something wrong with today's shave. Normally this razor is all about comfort, today it was slightly rough. I blame the blade, because looking back in my notes I have used this blade before in this razor. Will give the blade another go in another razor, otherwise it is time for the bin.

The soap / brush combination made an excellent lather. Most of you don't like unscented soaps, but this one is super. Indeed scentless (unlike 2 of my others) and delivers great shaves and leaves you with a smooth skin!

Tatara - Masamune SB
Astra - Superior Platinum (1)
Stirling - Naked & Smooth
Williams - Aqua Velva AS
Balea - Men Ultra Sensitive ASB

Will hop on my bicycle and go to the tennisclub to play some padel shortly. And with all the sitting the upcoming days, eating and talking that is not a bad thing I reckon ;-)

Today I gave the Astra SP blade another try, this time in the Karve CB. With the same bad / rough result. Swapped it after the first pass with a Personna comfort coated, and all was good again.

This was the first time for me to experience a bad blade in a pack of blades which I normally like. Good to know it wasn’t me 😜.

Now getting ready for lunch in an hour, do some groceries, and some tennis later today. Luckily with these rain showers, I am playing inside today.

Have a good Sunday all!

Yesterday I had a very smooth shave. So today, there actually wasn’t much to shave, but did it anyway. My impression is, is that the result on such a day is always less than “normally”, as if the stubble is too short. Especially in the difficult places, in my case the jawline.

Have you experienced that too?

Unfortunately not the best of shaves today. Not too bad, but not what I would expect. I blame it on myself (of course) because I was a little low on loading soap on the brush. And I blame it on the combination of this mild razor with a Personna comfort coated blade that wasn't as good as it used to be anymore (its 4th use). So still a comfortable shave, but there is some slight stubble left here and there.

Next time, I will load more soap and use a fresh blade ;-)

Which razor did you use today? 😀

Today I changed everything, with the desired result. A fresh Nacet blade in the Karve CB with the SB-C plate. The Mühle STF brush and plenty of MdC Vétyver soap led to a very comfortable shave with the sought after smooth face. This is why we all like classic wet shaving!

2024 has almost passed, time to make up my statistics (sorry for some Dutch words, but I am sure you will get the message) ;-)

Total number: exactly 250 shaves

Razors

2024 for my was the return to milder razors. Of the list below, I now only have the top 4 left in my possession. The Mühle R106 was almost only used during holidays. The RR GC has 3 different plates, the Tatara and Karve CB have 2. So actually, I still have 8 different razors (instead of 4). All razors and plates were (re-)bought again in 2024, except for the GC .84SB plate, which I already have since 2022.

Brushes:

I tried to use some canned shave gel again, but didn't like the fact I didn't need a brush, so stopped quickly with that. The Omega 10019 was binned after several years, the Simpson T3 sold.

Soaps:

I tried lots of samples early on in 2024. Below is the list of the soaps I still have. The rest of the shaves I used other soaps.

Blades:

I never really like Feather blades in the beginning, but this year was the turnaround for that. Must be the milder razors and better experience?

Looking forward to 2025:

I have receive a second SV soap and matching AS (Argania) and a badger Oumo brush. I only once had a badger brush before, right when I started classic wet shaving. Really looking forward to trying those out in 2025, I suspect I won't be disappointed.

Have a good one tonight, as we say here: fijne jaarwisseling en een gelukkig nieuwjaar! And thanks B&B for making it possible to enjoy our hobby even more with other crazy folks like myself ;-)

To start the year good, I used some of my most luxurious products. The SV soap and AS are new to me, very nice. So is the brush. In my case, this is a Oumo Warhammer with a 25mm Rorschach 2 band finest badger knot. Never had a brush like this. The knot is very dense, you don't feel much movement during the lathering. But still it is very comfortable to the face. I reckon it needs a lot more shaves before it is "war-ready", so it will be used a lot the coming period.

A picture of this beautiful brush can be found a little above here, as well as the Argania soap and aftershave

I still have a few days off before I need to start work again next week. So today I started with some quite intensive tennis, but that can't harm after the last couple of days that mostly consisted of sitting, eating and drinking ;-)

After that it was time for lunch, shower and a shave. As you may have read before, I bought this brush recently from another guy on a Dutch forum. The knot certainly is the biggest one in my small collection and very dense, more than I am used to. Tips are very soft, so still very comfortable on the face but with enough backbone to create a very good lather. Like I said before, I think it still needs quite some shaves before it reaches its best state, but hey, that's no problem ;-)

But boy, do I like the looks of this one. Beautifully made, it reflects the light differently every the time. And as I hoped, it matches great with my brass Karve razors (CB and Overlander). So very happy with this last buy from 2024.

I struggled a bit yesterday with the Masamune SB, Dorco Prime (3), Omega 10108 and SV soap. Mainly because I have quite some trouble generating a good lather with the Omega brush, no matter which soap I use with it. I need to load heavily, and still the lather disappears quickly and is thinner than with any of my other brushes. Perhaps I need to give my brush a vinegar and shampoo treatment. I only shampooed it when I got it and created 1 or 2 test lathers. I have used it for approximately 10 times now.

Anyway, today everything worked together excellently. I am starting to love this brush, it is a lather-canon. It creates a later quickly and more than enough, and delivers it with all the comfort to the face. Love it. And I think I have said it before, but the more I use the Overlander, the more I am starting to love it!

For days of work ahead of me starting tomorrow. After that, it's off to ski-ing in Italy!

Today I took out the Omega 10108 again, to see if I finally could get a decent lather with this brush. Softened up the brush while showering. But then, before loading the soap, I didn't squeeze as much water out as I did before. And that made all the difference. Loaded the MdC and had plenty of good lather for my 2 pass shave with some minor touch-ups.

I think, because I had only used synthetic brushes in the past year, I was used to starting of with a damp brush. With hardly any water left. But this one needs some more. So will have to keep that in mind next time again!

Now the lather problem is solved for this brush, I can fully enjoy the softness when face lathering. Excellent boar brush, certainly when you take into account I only paid €3,60 during pre-black friday week on rasoigoodfellas.
