Last shipment for a while...

I wrote a post a few days ago about being shocked by how much I have spent on shaving equipment since I started wet shaving.

Well, the reason I started to tally it up was because of this last round of items I ordered. They all arrived yesterday and stuffed my mailbox.

- New Rooney 1/1 Silvertip in Faux Horn (VintageBlades is a class act operation... very impressed with quality of packaging, contact info, and the brush is odorless.
- First tub of Tabac
- 25 Kai Razor blades
- Lady Star Gillette for my wife (she will be a wet shaver, she just doesn't know it yet) in blue
- A lot of 4 vintage Gillettes
- 1 possible Frankenrazor
- A fat boy that I overpaid for that is gonna take a miracle to salvage. This is the clincher for me that I am done. AD is over.

And, I picked up my first bottle of Thayer's.

Insanity!

Can someone tell me what I got in my lot?

From left to right it looks like a Fat Handle Tech with a comb (there is plate loss on this one), a 40's SS, New/Old?, A Tech with the baseplate upside down. They are dirty but in decent shaving order.

Any input on these would be great.

Also, there is this one... The top plate lost all its plating and is all bronze in color. Thoughts?

So, the fat handle tech is a frankenrazor then. It is very top heavy, but I will still give it a spin eventually.

As far as the OLD is concerned, due regular DE blades work in these. I think I remember reading somewhere that they needed a shim. Is this true?

No you don't need a shim for the old. I use modern blades in all my old types no problem.

Nice lot of razors, now you just need to mix in some adjustables and some British made Gillettes.

And you are missing modern pieces like Merkurs, Edwin Jagger, Goodwill.........

Have you thought about straight razor shaving?

I've not used one, but i've read that modern blades work fine in the Old Types without a shim.

You don't need to shim the Old Types. You can if you want to, but I think they shave perfectly fine without shimming. So why bother?

I am still getting my technique down with the DE. But, eventually I would like to go down the straight razor path.

I have a Slim Adjustable and a recently acquired Fat Boy that needs some serious TLC. I also have a Merkur 23c and a Hoffritz Slant. Some TTO gilletes as well.

This will be my first OLD type though. I just noticed the barrel is cracked on the handle, but otherwise seems fine.

No, the Old Types are pretty mild on account of them having very little blade exposure. Obviously this is where the appeal in shimming in it lies, as it would increase exposure some, but if it ain't broke, why fix it.

Just had my first shave today with a 1920s Brit Bostonian.

Was concerned about the blade shimming too, but the Astra Plat Sup worked just fine !!!!

You can add weight to the handle to even up the balance by putting lengths of solder into it (it's hollow).

Just be aware ( I only was today, shave 2 ), that there is ( on mine at least ) some movement in the blade.

Need to make sure it's all squared up before shaving.

Yes

Just be careful of postioning as you tighten it up !
