Large (23mm) vs Medium (21mm) Shaving brushes, any practical difference?

Recently looked at buying someone a shave brush as a gift and when in the store looked at the large (23mm) and the medium (21mm) models, they looked about the same but the large looked fuller if that makes sense and the handle had a bit more meat to it, I have a medium size merkur but eventually saw myself stepping it up to the large size, didn't know what people preferred here, if they found that the medium size is the sweet spot as it is easy to maneuver and didn't use too much cream, or if the large size is typically preferred?

I'd call both of those a medium... but there really is no defined transition point, just personal preference.

I think it depends on what they will want to use it for. For bowl lathering, a larger knot may be more practical. For face lathering, many people prefer a smaller knot. Do you happen to know the loft and hair type (pure, best, etc.) of the two brushes you're considering?

My personal preference is for larger brushes (24mm knots and above), though I face lather exclusively.

Hey thanks,

So they are both by Muhle, the classic silvertip badger models

Here is the large:

And here is the medium which I currently have an older version of:

I use a bowl exclusively when at home, on the road I have one of those small travel brushes which seemingly gets the job done.

Unfortunately there is no real way to see these in person, however I just bought someone what seemed to be a 23mm model as a gift and the larger handle seemed nice especially when compared to the 21mm model they had on hand.
