The Athena is just the slightest bit too "spicey" for me.

$207 - PayPal’d and shipped via Fed Ex Ground - insured.

Purchased in late December, 2023 for the factory delivered price (as I understand it) of $250, from a member who took it out of the box only to photograph it (he never shaved with it).

I’d estimate 30-35 shaves in the 124 days since its inaugural shave. My 2 Overlanders and a Tatara Masamune have been sharing equal time with the Athena during this period.

The handle has spent the majority of its time in the case, as I never got the hang of it.

Thanks for looking (scroll for photos).

I meant to mention that free shipping is for CONUS.

If you're not in the US or Canada, I'll have to add to the price - crediting you $15 off the actual cost. So, if shipping costs me $45, I'd add $30 to the $207 price.

Have any US members shipped to Europe recently? I just received a quote for US Priority Mail of $68.40. DHL wanted nearly triple that amount!

There must be a secret I'm unaware of, as I know US brush makers ship overseas regularly.

I seem to recall a 1 Lb. threshold for some shipping deals. The Athena with its mahogany box weighs about 12 oz, and by the time you put it into a box, it's about 18 ounces. I might be able to safely pack it under a 1 Lb. threshold if one exists.

Was it Express or normal? I have received packages from the US in the past for about half that amount. But that was for regular Priority Mail. The delivery days are never met anyway so why there is a premium for Express beats me.

Guido
Thanks, it was Priority Mail and not Express.

I couldn't use a flat rate box because they're either too small, or way too large. Last Fall, I sent a small, flat rate box to Belgium (VCR tape size) for about $43. The Athena's mahogany box is too large for this size box.

There must be something I'm missing. Someone advised me that one can get good rates by shipping through PayPal. This is something I've never explored. It may be time ;-)

Thom, you could check prices on Shipstation (what paypal uses) and PirateShip. I use both and they are always cheaper than USPS. What about using non-priority, is that significantly cheaper?
These are what I normally use too.Through PayPal is good because the have the buyers address too.
Not sure if insurance can be added for international online at shipstation. They supposedly don't track within the other country, I'm not sure if that's true, but from the web.

Easy to add insurance on pirateship.com and using USPS is easier for customs (but you have to hand it to a post office worker not drop it in a box at the post office).

UPS international you need 3x the customs paperwork.

Timing - it’s a toss up depending on your location and the country it is shipping to.

However at over 8oz (and this razor is over 8oz with the box) it isn’t cheap to ship international.

I avoid FedEx at all costs for razors- that is a real boondoggle for shipping this way. USPS is by far the easiest.

I use FedEx all the time for documents to Europe - but not razors. It’s a mess from what I have seen, both ways. It’s not an option on pirateship anyhow.

So insurance USPS international can be added on pirateship what about shipstation?
Does USPS track after it it leaves the US?

I don’t use ship station - using only pirateship lets me look everything up in one place.

Insurance on PS no problem.

Shipping in other countries depends on the county’s integration into the Postal System. No issues with Germany that I have experienced.

Is it swell time?

It’s so interesting. I can ship world wide for about €22. You would imagine vice versa to be somewhat similar.

Thanks for the comments on PayPal, Pirateship and Shipstation. I'll look into those.

I have a helluva time working with DHL. I have an account with them and I always get insane quotes. They tell me that if I increase my volume, I'll get better discounts. Their pricing isn't an incentive to increase my volume however - even if I could. The quote I got for sending the Athena to Poland, was $181.00 :eek2:

This got so convoluted, and ultimately, a US buyer stepped in, so the Athena is on its way to a new home.

I'll close this thread out.
