Kriss Kross with stropping compound?

This weekend I received a Kriss Kross sharpener that I purchased on eBay. I expected to replace the leather, but it looks unused.

The two questions I have are:

1) It says to condition the leather monthly with shaving cream. Can I use shaving soap to do this, it must it be a cream?

2) Can I put stropping compound in the leather disk to sharpen the blades more?
