Has anyone read a 1957 book called "Brushmaking Materials" by Fred Kidd, OCLC 3944154? I found a summary online. It sounds like a general book on brushes rather than shaving brushes in particular, but it might have some new historical insights.
I found http://www.worldcat.org/title/brushmaking-materials/oclc/3944154 which has a list of library copies throughout the English-speaking world: I noticed USA, Canada, UK, NZ, and Australia on the list. Sadly the closest library copy to me is about 300-mi away. I plan to look into interlibrary loan, but perhaps another brush-obsessed member has one closer to hand?
This book describes the various textiles and materials used for brushmaking, illustrated throughout with numerous microscopic photographs. 188 pages, incl. index.
