keeping blades sharp

my grandad told me that his dad used to take his double edge blades and put them in a glass straight sided drinking tumbler and swish them side to side with his finger on the side of the blade (poorly described i know but not sure how to better describe it), has anyone else heard of this or tried it? effective?

yes. it works but most likely only on carbon steel blades, and even then you might only get one, MAYBE two more shaves out of it. also remember, skin conditions then were tougher than they are today, so im sure they could stretch blades to lengths that would make us cry in agony.

hand stropping is something you might want to try.

I can vouche for the effectiveness of hand stropping, it takes seconds, requires not specialized equipment or technical know how and works like a champ.
By the way, Dave's advice on old SE razors, blade maintenance and several classic scents has always been spot on. Dave, you're now the burning bush when it comes to stuff like this.

I know for thin blades like the Astra's that you would flatten out the blade . Fauling up your stropping/honing angle on the blade edge . Rigid blade maybe .....
