What's new

Just Received My Omega 31064 from West Coast Shaving

The only other boar brushes I have are Omega Pro 49s so I thought it would be interesting to try out the 31064. $22.00 plus postage from West Coast Shaving.

The first thing I noticed was- no stink! Apparently the bleaching and banding process get rid of the pig butt smell? I dunno. Strange.

Like its big brothers, it's a lather monster. Seems a little less floppy than the 49, and a teensy bit scratchy (less so than a well broken in Tweezerman badger), but we'll see after break in; it's only been one shave so far. Sure is a pretty little thing...

I love the handle on the 31064. It's a good brush if you like them on the bigger side. If you like it now, just wait until after a month of use. :thumbup1:

I have an 80265. I believe it is the same knot but different handle. I might be wrong.

Phenomenol brushes, not just for the value, but the quality too.

An example:

Had 1 for a year and pif'd it. Bought another recently.

Yeah, Omega's higher-end boars are very nice. I'm more of a Semogue man, but I have a slightly smaller knot of the same grade in a custom Rudy Vey handle and really dig it. It's a very fine (thin) hair but decently well packed, so it makes a good brush. I keep telling myself I don't need another, but the 31064 is pretty sharp.

"High-end?" Mine cost under 14 bucks and comes with a stand and some sample cream.

I've tried a couple of $25-$30 semogues, which I absolutely hated.

They splayed so much. Whereas my silvertip, and the cheapo omega boar bristles spring back whe i am face lathering. They do not splay at all when wet. They stand up tall and are fantastic for face lathering.

Any ideas as to which semogue comes close to the omega's non-splaying tendencies as well as lovely soft and scrubby (in a very nice way) tips?
My omega was like this from the 2nd shave onwards right up to a year's use. I Pif'd it but i wouldn't b surprised if it was going strong right now in the same condition.

Semogues do splay more, yes - but I'd take my SOC over the Omega 9/10 days. It's a matter of preference, so don't spend too much time trying to "analyze" which one is better. But, if it helps you, I like that Semogues are denser and have more backbone, yet still have very soft tips .

I'm guessing this is where the saying "splitting hairs" came from.:lol: Sorry, I couldn't resist.

West Coast Shaving's description says the 31064 is IMITATION boar -- and I bet that's why there's no odor. Probably explains all the other characteristics, too. Probably a good brush anyway.

It's boar, that is a mistake on the site. I have the 81052, same knot, different handle.

It's definitely real boar, unless they added imitation dead pig scent to mine. If someone got one without any smell they got lucky as all my Omega's have had the boar funk when new. BTW this is an excellent brush.

Probably a good brush anyway.

Not probably. It is a fantastic brush.

As JPDyson said, in general, semogues do splay more.

Are there users of this Omega brush who can recommend a Semogue that is very similar to this omega, in that it doesn't splay so much?

Thanks

BTW, does anyone have any recommendations for bowl lathering with cream with this brush? It does seem to like soap a little better..

Thanks,
Jeff
