What's new

Just ordered....

Hey guys! I just ordered the EJ DE89(comes with 5 Derby blades). Im new to wetshaving and Ive only used a Merkur razor with Merkur SP blades and Wilkinson Swords. What should I expect from my new purchase?? Thanks guys!!

I have a merkur razor and not an EJ, not sure why you're switching. The merkur was terrible for me but maybe you'll have a better experience. Unfortunately the derby wasn't so much better either.

YMMV. Everybody gets different results with different stuff.

Having said that, the EJ is a great razor, and I strongly recommend that you continue to try different blades over the coming months. You will find a combination that speaks to you, and apart from coming down with a bad case of RAD you'll be set. The only other thing I'd say is that your technique should also improve, so think about what you're doing, search the net (and B&B!) for tips and help, and beyond all--have fun!

I think you should expect to be disappointed . . . by those damn Derby blades!

Load up with anything else and you will undoubtedly enjoy your new razor tremendously.

JMHO

I have found the EJ89 with the Derby blades it came with a very very good match. Everyone will react a bit differently to blade choice and comfort and the blade sampler selections recommended are a smart move.

Seems like a lot of disappointment with the Derby. I used my 5 pack of Derby's with the EJ89L as my first blade/razor combo. I thought it was great, quite a smooth shave that really helps you when you are just starting out as the blades aren't the sharpest and you are less likely to rip your face apart. I recently changed to the Wilkinson Sword (Black pack) and it's better than the Derby, but not by a ton. Have some Astra's that I'm waiting to use.

Enjoy and get a sampler pack - it's well worth it.

I wouldn't be too afraid to try the Derby's. I used the one's that came with my EJ and have never looked back and they too do a superb job in my Merkur razors. The only other blade that I use regularly are Feathers which are also well suited to the EJ razors. I've yet to have a bad shave with a Derby and certainly I haven't been one to complain of irritation, bumps, or otherwise simply because I don't get that using either of the two blades mentioned although YMMV.
