What's new

Just ordered my first Straight!

Yes, the time seemed right to pay for one blade, that will shave my face better than any disposable cartridge, and be with me for life.

I will not lie, I am rather excited. I have read the sticky: Interactive Guide to Straight Razor Shaving, and watched many a YouTube footage of straight razor shaving. I was tossing up between a smaller 4/8 and a 5/8, but considered that the 5/8 must be the most commonly found straight for a reason. So I got one:

http://www.mensbiz.com.au/shop/shav...raight-razor-classic-white-5/8-/prod_102.html (I got it a little cheaper thanks to the B&B discount).

I also came across this site, and was impressed by the logic behind this as a first strop:

http://ruprazor.com/store/index.php...category_id=9&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=32

And finally... I have decided to purchase a double sided Sharpening Sharpening Strop, and the 1.0 and 0.5 diamond pastes:

http://www.classicshaving.com/catalog/item/522944/4011478.htm

Ohhh... very excited, I must say.

Welcome to the light side.

Of course, you do know that no matter your first razor, even if it were a $700 custom, you will be purchasing more, lots more.

But, any questions or concerns, just let us know, there is a ton of knowledge here, and we are all willing to help.

I got the feeling that might be the case  as I seem to have an Acquisition Disorder concerning shaving software, so I see no reason why that would not cross over into collecting fine straights.

I already have a dull craving for a Damascus blade. I am certain that dull echo will manifest soon into a full blown yearning. :blushing:

You certainly are evil. Still, I must wait until my dull ache becomes a searing addiction, or the guilt will override the pleasure of such a luxury purchase.

He who hesitates is lost!

... and usually ends up with the searing pain of coulda-woulda-shoulda regret (not to mention having to post pictures of razors that Slant-Fan beat you to the punch on.)

... and here you thought Leighton was evil. :sneaky2::whistling:

Congrats on the first straight!

I'm unsure if those are shave ready (I wouldn't think so) as Nathan (mensbiz) was looking for a honer a while back...

It certainly was not shave ready. I mistakenly thought it was, as it passed the hanging hair test (I know.. I know.. doesn't tell you anything really)... but it did not shave well at all.

I will have to get it honed, I do not want to stuff up the blade.

Holy moly!

I noticed on the mensbiz site forum that Nathan is trying to get hold of honers in Oz for some time. He may have a few names he could pass onto you if needed. One of the biggest hurdles for me when I started with str8's over a decade ago was learning how to sharpen the things properly. I finally learned how by finding an old continental barber who was offering str8 shaves in Sydney. You may want to try the same. In my case, he has all his old hones, etc for sale because he was moving to disposable blade shavettes at the time so I saved a packet!
