What's new

Just lapped the CNAT

Managed to do it with a Norton lapping stone in about 45 mins...guess I got one of the softer ones?

Made three grid patterns and all three wee lapped off with the exception of this wee tiny section on the corner than I'm going to chalk up to character...

I'm going to wait to run a 1200 grit w/d against it tomorrow, but I'm not certain I need to....this thing is wicked smooth...

Is there anything left of the Norton lapping stone?

You know, it looks ok to me...I set out with the intent to back down if it didn't lap off my grid right away. Almost instantly I saw two larger circles in the center where the norton was making contact. kept working the stone until the grid was gone. Re-penciled the grid with very fine lines and repeated twice more...seems good to me!

Those Norton lapping stones work fine when they're flat.
Check the Chug's flatness with a known/proven straightedge. Check both longways and side to side.
I've found that relying on the grid going away as the sole indicator of flatness isn't always the best plan.

Side to side?

I agree with gamma. The two edges could have kind of mated into what looks like flat, but its possible neither of them are. Try it again with the sandpaper. Its a pita I know, put you wont have to so it again any time soon.

Will do...hopefully the variety grit pack arrives tomorrow!

Side to side - what I meant was check long ways, and then the short way.
You'd be surprised how many stones are bellied from long edge to long edge but flat as a board from short side to short side.

Would have never thought to check this...thanks!
