What's new

Just hit DC Flea - A Bust for shaving gear

This was my second outing to DC's largest flea market. While I was impressed with the market overall, the shave gear (or lack thereof) was rather disappointing. I found several str8s (way overpriced) and one Gillette NEW for $15 bucks which had enough loss on the head to make me turn it down...what a bummer!

The nicest thing I found was a vintage, old comb with a two-piece handle. The razor and handle broke down into four pieces which then fit in the bottom of an antique travel brush with its own nickel case (similar to the cans you see in WWI Bulldog sets). The set also had a leather wraparound travel case (not exactly sure of the exact model). Very cool and in great condition. But the guy wanted $250 for it which seemed WAY overpriced to me. I was expecting him to tell me max $100 bucks.

I did find a nice box for my vintage razors tho...so it wasn't a complete bust I guess!

I had a similar experience there a year or two ago. Not a bad way to spend the day, but shaving gear was scarce. That, and I made the mistake of showing up right at opening time. I was pretty well stampeded by a herd of octogenarii.

Congrats on the box, at least.

:lol: Next time just bring a sign that says "8:00 AM EARLY BIRD LUNCH SPECIALS ---->" and make sure the arrow is pointing away from the flea market!

Yes, that's bummer. I've hit several places over these last several months and gear is scarce and the straights are way overpriced and in poor shape. One day, though, that moment will come. A shiny new Bostonian is waiting for me somewhere out there, I know it.

Its pretty much bust here in the Vancouver area too from what I have experienced. Sounds like down the highway in the Seattle area, one could have better luck.

I hear you! Recently visited my brother-in-law in Columbia South Carolina. Went into around twenty antique shops. Was a total bust a far as shaving items go. Whats a body to do, fish e-bay?

I've found it to be a mix 50/50 on the deals you get on Ebay vs. a flea market or antique store. Last time I hit DC Flea, I got a Hoffritz Slant for 8 bucks. Thing looked like an abomination, but I brought it home and it cleaned up like new...so that was a good deal!

Today....not so much!
