Just Got A JNAT - Have Nagura Questions

So I just purchased a Shoubudani Type 100 JNAT from Macksim, and needless to say I'm very excited! I'm sure I will have many questions as I begin to use it, but my main question is; how do I figure out which Asano Nagura is which? I got a Tenjyou and Mejiro, but I don't know which is which. I also got a Tomo..that one I know because it looks just like the big stone...If any of you could help me figure out which is Tenjyou and which is Mejiro I would greatly appreciate it!!

OK, if I remember correctly you have them posted in the following order:

Tenjyou
Mejiro
Tomo (sure of that one)

I think that the kanji on the Tenjyou looks like a trashcan being opened so it's the last one (makes sense to me).
I also remember the order BTM - bottom or Botan, Tenjyou, Mejiro.

Now I've not used both Tenjyou and Mejiro in a progression yet, just the Botan, one of the two, koma and tomo (in the guise of another similar JNAT - it isn't very effective but does the job).

Now someone that knows jnats can correct me on getting this all wrong.

Thanks, Baker...I corrected the second pic that was upside down!!

Upon doing further research, I wonder If I was mistakenly sent 2 Mejiros! The kanji look the same on both stones, so maybe I should email Macksim for clarification...

There are 4 stratas
from finest to coarsest
Koma, Mejiro, Tenjyou, Botan
コマ ( 細 ) 、目白 ( めじろ ), 天上 ( てんじょう ) 、ボタン、
And 4 grades (colors)
Superior high grade, High grade, Superior selected grade, Superior grade
特級上、特級、別上、上級
Koma is most fine in grit but Botan, Tenjyou and Mejiri is fine too and its not much difference for knife sharpening
Maksim send you 2 Mejiro naguras... I'm sure he will make it up with you, don't worry.
Your stone looks good, a quick lap and some smoothening and you're good to go. The tomo is all you'll need if you use the stone as a finisher or for touchups.

Yeah, he must've sent me 2 Mejiro by accident....oh well, I'll get a Tenjyou in due time...In fact, Macksim just emailed me & said he'd send me a Tenjyou, so I will await that...What a great guy to deal with!

.I am still excited to use it as a finisher though, so I will report back as soon as I have a chance to use it!!

Yeah looks like he sent two Mejiro. Do you have a Botan? If so, you can start honing with it until you get the other one swapped (If I were you, I would keep the other Mejiro and just buy a Tenjou, they are getting to be quite rare).

If you don't have a Botan you can just bring the razor up to 4-6k and use the Mejiro, it's not a full progression but depending on the Mejiro it should be a good starting point.

I don't have a Botan; this is my first JNAT. I thought about the possibility of setting the bevel on my Chosera 1k, then doing some slurry work on my coticule (with a few dilutions). Then I could jump to Meijro & dilute that down before going to Tomo. It would be kind of a hybrid coti/jnat progression!!

This is what I did. I ordered a larger Tenjyou, so now I'll have 1 large Tenjyou & 2 small Meijro...I should be good for a while!

Sounds like a good plan. With Jnats it's not so much the dilution of the slurry that makes it finer but rather the breakdown of the particles. Still a little dilution never hurt anybody but on every slurry work it first until you feel something is different than the fresh slurry, like it lost it's abrasive power. Hard to explain but you'll feel it.
Then dilute and move to the next slurry (or repeat if you think it needs more work).

And please let us know how it compares to your Zulu grey stone.

Gotcha. Thanks for your help! And I will certainly post about my impressions of the Jnat vs. the Zulu as a finisher..

cleanshaved

I’m stumped
welcome to the world of Jnats.
I started with just a Tomo until I found a set of naguras a few weeks later, went off my 12 Naniwa to the Jnat with Tomo slurry with good results.

Here's another pic of it after lapping & prepping the Tomo. You can see how the Tomo is a bit darker as it's a slightly softer stone than the base stone...

I've used j nats with just tomo nagura .. I dulled the razor and was easily able to bring back the bvel with the tomonagura stone did'nt need a coticule or anything else ... whats the other nagura acatuly used for ?
