What's new

Just bought one of those (cheap) Chinese brushes.

Well, I decided it wouldn't hurt to satisfy my curiosity. I needed a cheap travel brush, and would have settled for a throw away (based on my budget). But I also really thought a turnback would be nice if I could afford one. I have read many threads here about those controversial products from Frank Shaving (not sure why there is no 's after Frank, either...seems silly) and decided to throw caution to the wind and place an order. Got it for under $30 including shipping, in about a week. And I have to say that the quality is impressive. I'm not going to become a fanboy or write an epistle about them, but I really like this brush. I bought it in Finest badger, hoping for a balance of softness and backbone. It exceeded my expectations in both.

I certainly won't stop buying from the traditional manufacturers, but this is a nice alternative to have available, especially if you are on a tight budget.

Personally, I think badger is vastly overrated. Give me a nice firm boar for a fraction of the cost. Horse is quite nice too. Badger? Eh!

I have a Silver Tip from Frank I have been using for a year or so. It is in my rotation getting used for a week about once a month. Little shedding and the knot is holding up well. Good luck with yours.

I just got my first good quality boar today and I love it already. Performs better than any of my badgers and was much cheaper! Don't fall for the badger hype!
From this day on I am a... BOARRIOR (Don't kill me for that bad pun )

The brush I got was a Semogue 1305 by the way.

So far I have three brushes; all badger. I plan to add more, and eventually want horse and boar. I do like badger, but the stiffer varieties are more to my liking. For that reason, I am sure that I will enjoy boar.

I have a Chinese brush and I use it in my rotation.

Nothing wrong with it at all

I am amazed at the density. I know that comparing it to my Vulfix is unfair, but the contrast is night and day. I made several lathers with it last night, and didn't notice any shedding. It cut into my MWF better than my other brushes by far! It was an embarrassing amount of lather from such a small brush...

I got a great shave using it this morning, too.

I bought a silvertip brush from Frank Shaving about four months ago. It took a couple of weeks of daily use before I felt it was fully broken in, but I wouldn't be without it now. It came nicely packaged complete with stand, which I thought was a nice touch.

I use a Franks turnback when I'm on he road all the time. Although it's my cheapest brush, I don't feel like I'm settling when I use it, it hand lathers like a champ.

nice travel brush that collapses is the Mühle 81M536 Travel Brush. It is pretty light too. I also like to use my small Vie-Long Pogo (horse) when travelling, or Omega 80266, 10005, or even the Turkish No. 6, they all dry relatively fast compare to say a Simpson Commodore or a New Forest Chunky, or even the rather dense Semogue SOC.

I really wanted either the Vulfix turnback ($65) or a Muhle ($52.50), but this price was too tempting to ignore. Plus, I always wanted to try a two-band. It is definitely not floppy!

And thanks for the links above; I had read most, but not all of those.

Own two FS brushes. The first turned me on to badger it was a custom small handle brush in finest. The other is the new faux horn handle range. Both are brilliant brushes for the money. The fuax horn has NOT SHED A SINGLE hair!!! have used it every day for over a month now. Very good. But, I also have simspon brushes aswell. So enjoy your new brush.

I have a 5 dollar wood handled Diane made in China brush that I picked up at a beauty supply shop. The first few uses I was not impressed, now a few months later it is a really nice performer.A bit stubby but soft without being floppy.

The best thing I ever got by purchasing a cheap brush was a cool 'retro' box------here's a pic of a Burma Shave brush box. I bought it new from a local drugstore a few years ago. Smelled like a dead horse when wet-----so nasty, no amount of washing get rid of the smell, so I got rid of the brush!! (but saved the cool box!) The other side said, "Feel your face as you ride by, now don't you think it's time to try------Burma Shave"

I have a burma shave brush too. It was the first brush I got when starting the DE shave addiction. It smelled so bad for the first month then I broke it in very well now its a great performer that smells like shaving soap. I almost wrote it off and got on the badger kick but now I'm back to loving its performance again.
