June Arlington Cologne Discussion Thread

As you all know June is upon us. We've decided this would be Arlington and Menthol month.

This discussion thread will be for the famed D.R. Harris Arlington.

What do you like about Arlington?

What don't you like about it?

Is it a regular in your rotation?

Anything you'd like to share about this famed juice will be greatly appreciated.

Discuss.

I have a decant of the AS of D.R. Harris Arlington. I assume it smells about the same as the cologne. Pretty much a classic eau de Portugal I would say. Less truly orangey than say Trumper Eau de Portugal or even 4711 EdP. A clean neroli accord mostly with little in the way of dirty notes. Nice and masculine and tradtional English scent although not unlike those Italian colonias, although I suppose the latter tend to have more floral notes.

Overall I guess I have come to prefer my neroli with a little bit of dirt in it, like say C&S Neroli. But Arlington is a nice scent. It is in my rotation because I recently got the decant. I am guessing it will not be after awhile. I really like the Pinaud eau de Portugal which is very inexpensive and can be used very liberally as an AS and has little tenacity.

That sound about right? It has no menthol though!

I like it. This is the first day I've worn it, and probably the most "citrusy" of the colognes I have. I still get wiffs of citrus almost three hours after application, so longevity is good for those notes.

Good stuff. I like citrus scents (being a big fan of Channel For Men and Bowling Green); the fern put me off a little at first but I have grown to like it. The citrus and fern complement each other well.

I don't own the cologne but I love the AS. Nice & citrusy with a little hit of menthol. Perfect for those warm, June days (like today! :w00t:).

Strangely enough, Arlington is the only scent from all of D.R Harris line I've never had a whiff of (whether it be soap, AS, or cologne). I'm trying to figure out how this happened. It's not like I'm not aware of its existence.

Looks like I have to hit up West Coast Shaving again soon....

I love the juice and have the shave soap as well. The Cologne is a little "fresher" citrus and then fern and I really enjoy the scent, however it doesn't last terribly long on me....

I do not get so much fern. I need to sniff this one again and pay more attention. Fern is not tradtional in eau de Portugal, so I would have been wrong in what I said previously.

EDIT: Uh, uh!? It has menthol, too? I really do need to pay closer attention.

Arlington was a strange one. When I first tried a test spray, I thought it was awful. Yet it grew on me to such a degree that I ended up buying a bottle. That was last year or the year before, however. I should try some again and see what I think now.

Where did you get a decant of Arlington from?

I'm dying to sniff/try Arlington and Marlborough but have learned my lesson too many times over to buy blindly ever again.

I got it in a friendly swap with another B&B member of things we wanted each other to try, but judging by the label on the 10 ml or so decant/sample bottle it looked like it may have come from a retail outlet of some sort. Perhaps someone knows of a source for such samples of DR Harris scents. I am not that familiar with them, but this sample has but them on my radar screen!

Funny you should say that. I found this at basenotes:

Forget "light citrus over fern;" as of spring 2009 Arlington has been reformulated into a classic eau de cologne fragrance, with neroli and citronella prominent.

Could it be you don't get fern because it isn't there?

I was thinking about buying this because I had a Trumper fern sample and liked it. It seemed to me fern and citrus would be a good combo. I was looking for recommendations when I ran across a couple of claims it had been reformulated into a 4711 scent. Anyone know for sure?

I'm a big fan of the scent so I really like this stuff. The scent is not overpowering at all. In fact, it's fairly light and non-offensive to me. The only gripe I have is that it doesn't last but a couple hours on me and seems a bit expensive for that reason. It is nice layered with the after shave, though. Good for the summer!

Great catch OldAF! Thanks for pointing this out! I am a big fern/fougere fan, and I am embarassed not to smell fern in this if it is really there! Fern/fougeres are such a varied genre with all sorts of extras to them. I was trying to think of a good example with citrus, but they are surely out there.

thanks!

I don't like it. Way too floral for my tastes. Reminds me of a funeral home, actually...maybe I sniffed the new formulation?

I must have the newer stuff because I don't get any fern notes at all. I know there isn't really a 'fern' scent to which it could be compared and the 'fern' label is somewhat vague. But based upon my experience with Pen's EF and Trumper's Wild Fern, I don't detect anything like either of these two in Arlington. I get the citrus and some light floral notes and a light powdery, soapy base. That said, I really like what is there. It smells wonderful. My only complaint is the longevity, or rather, the lack thereof. It just doesn't last long at all on me. It seems to fade to an almost non-detectable level within a couple hours (2-3) and is then only noticeable when very close to a point of application. But like somebody else said, longevity is a bit better when used in conjunction with the aftershave and shaving soap. However, the wonderful Arlington smell still doesn't hang around long enough for me.

It's Arlington for me (the AS and the cologne) a couple of times a week this time of year. The initial citrus is intense and is a very welcome start of the day scent. There is a powdery mid-note that is fleeting, but unmistakable. The ferny-musky base hangs around with a hint of the citrus for most of the day. I use this stuff when I want something understated. I like it, most of all, because it isn't sticky, and it behaves no matter how hot the day.

I actually agree with the fern/light citrus comparison. I smell both fairly evenly and I love Arlington!

Yes! Arlington has NOT been reformulated. Alison Moore, the Managing Director, of DH Harris assures me that it hasn't been and I believe her. Why the heck would they? It's a signature cologne for this small English company. It's still citrus over fern. It always has been a variation on an eau de cologne theme. It's always been subtle never in your face. They did reformulate the Arlington after shave milk in Spring 2009 apparently. But they haven't changed the scent. Sadly the review on Basenotes is plain wrong on every count, though happily for all who like Arlington the way its always been.

+1 I've had very old samples of Arlington and at present a new bottle. I don't/didn't notice a difference.
