Day 27, still in.

Brush: RR 400 matte Plissoft
Cream: Gillette Foamy red
Razor: RR Lupo 95
Blade: Derby Extra (1)
Number of passes: 2 (cheeks WTG and XTG, neck XTG and XTG)
Touchups or buffs: Yes
Aftershave: Old Spice and Nivea Sensitive balm
Sting: Yes, minor
Result: DFS

I had a BOSC shave this morning because I paired the very aggressive Lupo 95 with the very mild Derby Extra. You read that right. I used the much maligned Derby Extra this morning. And guess what? It shaved. It shaved just fine. It was very smooth and comfortable, but it did slightly tug on my jawline, but that might be a technique thing because it didn't tug at all on my neck, which is part grizzly bear. The shave was closer than what I had yesterday with the RR German 37 slant paired with a Dorco Titan, but not as close as when I match the Lupo 95 with a sharper blade. In all honesty, I was shocked at how well the Derby worked in a very aggressive razor. I liked it. I don't think I'll buy a 100 pack anytime soon, but I'll definitely use up the tucks that I've acquired over the last 1.5 years that were thrown in boxes of some razors I've purchased.

"Mailcall"...
I received my baseplates which I ordered back in November 2023... No, there's no need to blame UPS this time... 🤣

Here's the background...

Day 28, still in.

Brush: RR 400 matte Plissoft
Cream: Gillette Foamy red
Razor: RR Lupo 95
Blade: Derby Extra (2)
Number of passes: 3 (cheeks WTG, XTG, and ATG; neck XTG, XTG, and XTG)
Touchups or buffs: Yes
Aftershave: Old Spice and Nivea Sensitive balm
Sting: Yes, significant
Result: Cheeks BBS, neck DFS

I used the Derby Extra again this morning. Since it felt very smooth and comfortable, I decided to perform an experiment. Perhaps it was out of excess confidence or arrogance, but I think it was mainly out of curiosity. I decided to add a third pass to my routine, including going ATG on my cheeks. The result was my cheeks are now BBS, which I have gotten before while going WTG and XTG only. I now understand the criticism against the Derby Extra. While it is very smooth, it is pretty abysmal ATG. Even after mowing down my whiskers with WTG and XTG passes first, the remaining stubble was an absolute roadblock for the Extra. The hair pulled and tugged. It eventually cut, but left me with significant aftershave sting. I don't think it will be lingering irritation, but the initial shock was the sting was just that...shock. I haven't felt sting like that in a long time. I think the Extra is a nice WTG and XTG blade, and I'll use it for those purposes only. But, I think I'll stick to sharper blades more frequently now.
