Jumped into the Deep End

I appreciated Luc postings his recent foray into straight shaving and following his updates. I hope you gentlemen will permit me to copy his format.

Last night was my first straight razor shave. I used a Dovo Black Star courtesy of Obelit along with a Dovo canvas/leather strop. I do have some concerns about my stropping technique but I trust my confidence will come with practice. Besides that I'd much rather describe my experience with the steel on my (formerly) BBS mug.

Overall, I would say the results from my first straight shave were "adequate". I also experienced several "cat scratches", but one in particular was just as Mdunn described, I applied the steel to my face motionlessly and then I must have moved slightly horizontally as I instantly felt the pain of the steel biting into my neck, but I was fortunate that it wasn't very deep. There was some blood but none more than the few other scratches and none really required the styptic... although I would have used it if I was using my DE.

As was mentioned in another thread I've read, some folks get their first "cocky" shave on about the third one. But I think mine was the first. I was hoping to eliminate the jumping and such that many experience due to being to tentative with the blade so the theme of my first shave was supposed to be: "Shaving with Confidence". In retrospect, I do not regret this plan of action, in fact I think it was still the best one for me, but my next shave will be thematically titled: "Confident Shaving... for a Novice". I think shaving with confidence, ie. using appropriate pressure and short strokes is grand but before every stroke I want to remember to begin moving that razor vertically prior to touching my skin to lessen the risk of horizontal slices.

Other improvements I know I need to make involve left handed and "upside-down for ATG passes". OH YES! I forgot to mention, I was so "confident" (I wasn't really too cocky yet was I ??) that I decided I might start practicing ATG too, because even with a DE, only the ATG pass makes me smooth. Probably a bit much to tackle for my first shave huh? It wasn't really too bad, but I may have bitten off more than I could chew... too many lessons might make me forget the easier, basic steps.

I too found my chin to be the largest challenge. The angle of the blade either bit/caught down between the hairs or it would slip right off my chin. Not sure how I'm best going to figure that out yet. My neck is also traditionally a challenge whilest DE shaving and this proved to be the same with a straight. My only positive is that my neck seems more likely to be achieved than a smooth chin appears to be at this pont.

A big thank you to Joel for his tutorials and for others like Mdunn for the many comments in so many first timer posts.

One other thing I noticed, as did Luc, is that my shave lather (Tabac soap) also seemed to dry out VERY quickly. I imagine this is because I was concentrating deeply and really spending much more time than normal between new applications of the lather. I also was surprised at myself the first couple of times I realized I actually needed to rinse off the razor. For some reason, that fact was being forgotten and I had to actually stop myself sometimes to do something that is completely unconscious when shaving with a DE. I think I might use some good shave cream for the next shave. Maybe Proraso, that sounds nice. I think that might hold the moisture a little longer than the Tabac or MWF (which I think dries faster than any). Someone also mentioned oil. I don't have any fancy pre-shave stuff, but a little olive oil maybe??? Is that nuts?!

I'll post again after my next shave... if anyone cares.

I'm currently awaiting funds required to buy a straight, in the meantime I lurk the straight razor forums real hard.

I enjoyed reading about your first shave and would appreciate it if you post some follow up shave details, as it will be a journey that I will soon be undertaking.

Last night was my first straight razor shave. ... etc.

Congratulations!

You might want to check some of the Wiki entries at Straight Razor Place (SRP). In particular
http://straightrazorplace.com/srpwiki/index.php/Beginner's_guide_to_straight_razor_shaving.

The following sections are of particular importance:
http://straightrazorplace.com/srpwiki/index.php/Theory_of_stropping, and
http://straightrazorplace.com/srpwiki/index.php/Shaving_passes

All of the sections are important but you apparently already have equipment
and the section having to do with prep should be nothing new to a DE/SE shaver.

Congratulations! No need to check the water, just jump on it - the water is fine.

As a sanity check, when I switched from DEs to straights, I too started making my lather differently. Perhaps with more water? Regardless, it stays plenty hydrated for at least 15 minutes, about the average length of a shave.

Straight Shave #2:

I waited an extra day between shaves to prevent excess razor burn... I hate shaving on skin that's still irritated from a poor shave the previous day.

The first big change I made was to whip up a big ol' batch of proraso with a little extra water. That did the trick... worked like a charm.

I felt much better about shaving my cheeks and side burns. They're not perfect, but certainly suitable. My neck though... not so much. As usual, even with my DE I have to make about 5 passes very studiously to even approach a DFS (darn fine shave). With this straight blade, I stop after about three passes because I feel like I'm really pressing my luck. My chin is also virtually untouchable with that blade. The blade either skips off or cuts down between the whiskers and holds my skin hostage daring me to make my move. :kyle1: (I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure of using this smilie before.)

So, practice I shall continue.

ALSO... things have been going great for several years, but I think straight shaving is severly straining my relationship. Maybe you guys could give me some pointers? Anyone else have this problem??

Maybe I should provide more details... You see for about three years now I've been shaving with a DE and finishing my shave with Aqua Velva Ice Blue. Sure, I admit occasionally I've had a wandering eye and although I'm reluctant to put this on the internet... ... it's true, I've even dabbled with another AS when given the chance... but NOT ANYMORE, I SWEAR! First of all, the one was an old friend (Old... get it?) but we don't really get along anymore anyways, and the other was a pretty bottle from Germany. I don't even think we'll ever see each other again... although I also admit I wouldn't mind getting a second chance :001_wub: <<not sure I can type with a straight face anymore (oh great now the puns start-up too.)>>

... anyways, to get to the point of the story... we've always had a great relationship. Not perfect, but seriously, I chose the AV for a reason. But ever since I've started straight shaving now, every shave ends with me thinking she's a real B****! Help B&B, my aftershave and I are on the rocks!!!

Don't get discouraged after a couple shaves . Like the rest of us , you need to perfect your skills . Things will become second nature for too long . Just like operating the remote and watching TV .

Takes time for you and your beard to adjust to the new method of straight shaving . Keep with it .

I'm not thinking about quitting just yet, just a little grumbling about the "starting-over" process. DE wasn't the easiest transition for me either.

Another thing, I was reading the "One-handed shaving tips" thread and it reminded me of something important. I was EXTRA lucky during my shave last night. After a couple of strokes on the left side of my face using my right hand to pull the skin taught, I released my skin and began to quickly pull my hand back to it's natural side but my finger slapped against the blade of the razor in the process. I just froze in mid-air realizing the stupidity of the mistake I'd just made. I even heard the "sing" of the blade as if it was being stopped... ON MY FINGER!!! No blood... "whoooooo" that was a close one.

--Lesson learned .

Not so lucky yesterday as I was shaving on my left side with my right hand. From the instructional posts I've read, I understand that that isn't exactly correct, but shaving along my jaw is very awkward using my left hand and then I read all these one-handed posts etc, so I figure I'm in the clear. Anyway, I was shaving and pretty confidently too, when I placed the blade against my jaw and dropped it down like a DE razor. Yikes, did that hurt, and yes... there was the distinct color of red on my blade. I had to run and dig around the house for my styptic pencil as I hadn't used it at all with any of my previous shaves but after finding it in my travel case I was very happy with the end result. I actually had a meeting 20 minutes later and I think that none were the wiser.

Today I admit that I was running late and I pulled out my old Gillette Toggle. I dropped in a fresh Red Personna and really realished the click, click, click of the adjuster and I had a superlative shave. I think the straight shaving has improved my DE technique even further, but switching back and forth probably won't help me very much. In fact, I think these two times that I've moved the blade horizontally were in fact instinctive movements due to my DE expereince. I really hope I can break myself of that ... not fun.
