Jovan Musk for Men

I went to Target today and was looking at the colognes, I smelled some Jovan Musk for Men, and it smelled like perfume to me. Is this what musk is supposed to smell like? Any suggestions for a pure "musk" scent? Im interested to know what it is supposed to smell like.

Also, I smelled some Canoe which smells exactly like clubman to me.

My Dad was a Jovan Man till the end. :thumbup1:

Pure musk scent smells like urine/feces. Musk, along with civet, castoreum, and ambergris is used to enhance the longevity of scents and to tie the different notes of a fragrance together. Alone these scents are normally quite vile but when blended with other notes to create a fragrance they blend quite nicely.

Most scents that say they have use those notes are often using a synthetic version and if they do use the real deal they are oftentimes very expensive.

Thanks, I didn't know that it originally came from animals glands, which sounds pretty gross to me. So when someone says "You smell like musk," they are saying you smell like an animal.

from wikipedia
Musk is the name originally given to a substance with a penetrating odor obtained from a gland of the male musk deer, which is situated between its stomach and genitals. The substance has been used as a popular perfume fixative since ancient times and is one of the most expensive animal products in the world. The name, originated from Sanskrit muṣká meaning "testicle," has come to encompass a wide variety of substances with somewhat similar odors although many of them are quite different in their chemical structures. They include glandular secretions from animals other than the musk deer, numerous plants emitting similar fragrances, and artificial substances with similar odors.[

Jovan Musk and AV Musk (yes, AV Musk) are two of my favorites. :thumbup1:

I wish Jovan would bring back Grass Oil (sigh).

Edit: I saw a AS/Cologne gift pack of Jovan Musk at my local Walgreens for $17.00. Not bad.

I've never found musk to be the least bit offensive. Originally, I believe the scent was obtained from glands on a certain species of deer. Now, most of it is synthetic. The purest musks are reputed to be in Ajmal's oil and Serge Lutens' Muscs Koublai Khan.

I have a bottle of Luten's MKK on the way. Should be here tomorrow. I have to see just how wonderful this stuff is. Blind buys are always iffy but most often turn out awesome (for me at least.)

Really it never occurred to you before now that musk came from animals when there's so many animals with the word musk in their name? You know like musk deer, musk duck, muskox, musk turtle or muskrat?

I just bought a bottle of AV musk for my little brother for Christmas as part of a small shaving kit (didn't get him wet shaving gear yet, don't trust him w/ sharp objects) but I have to agree, the AV Musk does smell great.

Natural musk scent comes from the musk deer, but they have been a very endangered species for quite a long time and I think all the musk used in perfume is synthetic and has been for probably 20 years.

It's different though. I've read that what actual musk smells like would be absolutely nothing like what we associate the note of musk with.

Jean Paul Gaultier 2 is a scent with the only notes being vanilla and musk, I think it's kind of feminine and wouldn't wear it myself but it is one of the most alluring scents there is.

I don't think anyone makes pure musk scents, they are always combined with sweeter notes like vanilla and amber - which is another thing based off of a natural ingredient but only comes in synthetic form today.
