Joris Soap - why don't I use this more often?

Sometimes I forget how good some products are until I return to them. This soap is made in England and is also available as Plisson-branded soap with a different scent (which I've never smelled). This stuff is some of the best soap available IMO. It doesn't take much effort at all to load it and create a very thick, dense, emollient lather that would make even tallow lovers take another look. In my 4 years of doing this, this was the first time I've made such a Barbasol-like lather from a soap. I don't know who manufactures it, but they need to be the go-to for any company that wants to put out a veggie soap. Trumper and Penhaligon's should look at them. Seriously.

The shave was wonderful. A five-day beard came off with no effort. The scent is a very deep aquatic perfume that's very "French." It smells like a modern-ish cologne. It really was a pleasure to use and I need to use it more often!

Thanks for the review. The Joris and Plisson soap has always caught my eye when browsing the selection at Royalshave but I've not pulled the trigger on it yet. Currently saving up for a Joris razor.... maybe I should get the soap of the same name and have a true Joris like experience.

It's pretty awesome. Lathers as easily as Tabac. Tallow lovers would swear it has tallow in it.

Kevan, when did you buy it? Correct me if I'm wrong but if it was more than a couple years ago its likely that it does have tallow. I remember reading that their soap that did contain tallow was one of if not the best, even surpassing D.R. Harris.

It was April 2012 I believe. Perhaps May. It's the veggie formulation. And after Klar (Seifen and Kabinett), the old Stearate formulation of TOBS, and now this....I think it's clear that a soap need not have tallow to be awesome.

Yes it sure does, but I still find Tabac more slick and protective than Joris. Still, you cannot beat the Joris tuya soap bowl for beauty.

This is one I've always wanted to try. Ten years ago it was such a super exclusive soap touted as one of the best. I'm hesitant with the reformulation though, especially for the premium they ask. After

May I ask the OP how it compares to Truefitt&Hill's soap? I was expecting it to be the same.

Never tried T&H soap. But in his UK-made soap comparison, cvac noted that the newly manufactured T&H luxury pucks were inferior to Plisson/Joris. And yeah, $24 is a premium for a refill. Only the AOS soaps and Czech & Speake ones are more these days.

That is a beautiful bowl..... but it's like the C&S soap dishes for me..... or a flacon of Creed Spice & Wood cologne.... I know they are worth it, but whenever I think about spending that much money on something I can almost always think of something else to spend the money on in a more frugal way. Still, beautiful bowl. Every so often I'll do a Google images search on it and admire the beauty.

I recently got some of the Plission brand and I agree the fragrance is excellent and the soap is as you remark lathers beautifully. I skipped on the bowl this time but I think when I run dry on this its a no brainier as that is one beautiful bowl. I wonder what the difference is in scent between the two.

By all accounts they have a different scent. I only know about the Joris version though. Strong, marine-perfumey cologne scent.

I have the Plisson/Juris Thuja Wood bowl, bought it from Colonial Drug. Its a beautiful addition to my shave den and D.R. Harris refills fit perfectly!

Took advantage of Phil's clearance sale at Bullgoose and picked up a puck of both the Joris and Plisson shave soap in the cardboard tins for a good price. This soap intrigues me and I'll have to do a little more research...... I know that they are made in the UK, but I'm wondering by who? Is it the same soapmaker who makes Valobra and C&S soaps? Is it even a tallow soap?

I didn't really do my homework on this one.... kind of an impulse buy because they were on sale. I just like to try as many soaps as I can I guess.

Ben, can you comment on the differences in scent, if any? I nearly pulled the trigger on one of them but figured it was another jacked up reformulation and best to avoid it. I am in a real conundrum. I am the biggest Anlgo-phile around and can barely stand any of the UK made shave soaps any more. If not for D.R. Harris I wouldn't have any in the den.

Cheers, Todd

Sure Todd, I will comment when they arrive. Phil says I should have them by Friday.

Todd, just got my package from Bullgoose (that was quick). The Joris and Plisson soaps smell identical to me. They smell like Dopobarba de Camaldoli (aftershave splash) to me. A sort of bitter green fougere type scent. Yeah, these are not made by the same company that makes Valobra/C&S. These are not tallow soaps.

I'd say that they are exactly the same, but I have not used them yet obviously. Just going by appearance, packaging, and scent.

Ben

Thank you Ben. One of these may be in the works for me yet. A sort of bitter, green fougere? Sounds rather nice. One last question. If you had to categorise the scent as being closer to modern(think of the overwhelming sugary water/oceanic/"ozone" scents you deal with in the perfume section at a mall store like Nordstrom's) or more traditional, which would you say? Thanks again.

Definitely traditional. The scent will remind you more of "soap" rather than "perfume". It's a clean green scent, but there's definitely a bitterness to it.
