John and His Pipe

Taking a cue from seanusa's journal, thought I would document my renewed use of a pipe after a hiatus of about forty years. And forty years ago I probably only lasted with it for about a year at most. At any rate, tonight was my first night. At the exchange today I bought a packet of Captain Black (because that was all they had). Would have gotten pipe cleaners but the lady at the counter said someone cleaned them out (pun intended) yesterday by buying all they had! Loaded the pipe loosely with the Captain Black; didn't really pack it in tightly. Used a kitchen match to get it going, and think it went well. It is a smallish pipe and the smoke lasted about thirty minutes. Did have to relight about five times, and I don't know why unless it was because I didn't pack it tightly. Would that be? The Captain Black tasted acceptable, but wasn't has good as I thought it would be. Was hoping for a sweet note that wasn't there and perhaps some aromatic that wasn't there either. But it was smooth enough. Did find at least one tobacconist in Omaha who has Frog Morton, so may try to get some soon. Along with pipe cleaners! And I suppose I need one of those pipe tools; did the tamping tonight with a match. Oh, the pipe was the Kaywoodie with the stinger I mentioned in an earlier post, and I do believe toward the end of the smoke that I was getting some gurgle. Wish I knew why I had to relight it five times; would appreciate tips on that.

Relights are a part of pipe smoking. You'll get better with practice, but still have to relight occasionally throughout the bowl.

The stinger is your culprit on the Kaywoodie, they tend to pool condensation and saliva. Just something you may have to deal with on that pipe. Buy some pipe cleaners anywhere you can and feed them down the stem during the smoke if you get a gurgle and see if that helps. The relights may have to do with the Captain Black being straight from the pouch and being wet, try and lay out the amount you wish to smoke on a plate under a small lamp for 15 mins before you wish to light up and see if that helps! A Czech tools helps tamping indeed, but a fat headed nail works just as well in a pinch.

Relights aren't a problem. Dry the tobacco out a bit if you wish. It is better to pack to loose than too tight- you can always tamp it down if it is too loose. It is harder to unpack it.

Thanks for the advice! Today I believe I am going to be off to get some pipe cleaners, perhaps a tamper, and perhaps some different tobacco to try. Did discover last night that my Kaywoodie I have is likely my Dad's, and that it has " numbers". Besides the Kaywoodie emblem on the side of the pipe, it reads Drinkless on one side of the stem and has 7003 on the other side. Additionally, the emblem is on top of the stem (vice the side). Think this means it is pre-1936 (maybe).

Went outside tonight with my newly purchased Frog Morton Original, my new pipe tool and had at it! Very enjoyable! The Frog Morton was mild, aromatic (though I had somehow expected more from the latakia), flavorful bowl. There was a sweetness that I had expected (maybe thinking of the Frog Morton in the Cellar) that was not present. Nonetheless, I am very happy with my new purchase and look forward to it again tomorrow night. My pipe's bowl is not particularly large, so the smoke lasted about 30 minutes. Draw was light, seemed to burn well all the way to the bottom with only about five relights.

Latakia all depends on your palate. I find it stronger than an aromatic, others don't. Some others (cough...Jason...cough) would rather drink Veg than smoke Latakia.

I must admit that latakia was the taste of an Egyptian cigarette that I remember (sort of) from many years ago. But I guess it turns out that I really had no idea what latakia tasted like until tonight. Honestly, I do rather like it!

One of us! One of us! One of...errm, glad you like it! :biggrin1:

Latakia- it does a body good.

+1

I equate latakia to cheese, seems like the more "nose" there is to it, the milder the flavor ends up being. It goes from campfire in a bag to a smooth flavorful and quite mellow on my palate. Throw some Perique in there, now you have a party!

Latakia and Perique party and everyone is invited! :biggrin1:

Tonight's bowl of Frog Morton was very nice and went well. Think it took five lights in all, at least initially because I did not follow the advice to set the tobacco under a lamp for 15 minutes. Regrettably, the smoke only lasted about 20 minutes; I need a larger pipe! Would like to say that I am looking forward to a smoke tomorrow night, but that will not happen. My upper teeth will come out in the morning, which means no smoking, no chewing, no biting and no fun for some time! Another long stint of having nothing but soup! Oh, well, when it is all over it will be better.

Hang in there and heal up! Just don't go jonesing for a steak and toss one in a blender, I've heard bad stories...

Agreed! Take it easy and heal up. Smoking after oral surgery isn't all that great, so heal completely before diving in and know that you have new adventures ahead. Enjoy our pipe of the day posts for now and plan your piping adventures. It's all waiting for you in the other side.

When had my uppers pulled, the had to shape the gum line. My gums went out, then back in. Can't get a good denture seal that way. So, with nothing but Novocain, they cut my gums open and shaped the bone with glorified side cutters and file. I never felt anything, but hearing your bone crunch for a half hour is strangely unnerving. I was an emotional wreck by time they were done.

I got queasy just reading that! :scared:

John, I see in another thread that you found Ted's Tobacco. You also might want to check out Sg Roi Tobacconist in the Old Market. That's where I got my start with pipes. Back then I worked in downtown Omaha so it was quite convenient to shop there.

You might also want to shop the antique mall just off Hwy 75 in Plattsmouth. I've seen some estate pipes there and some nice pipe stands.

Thanks, Paul. I know about the shop in Old Market; have stopped in but many years ago. Not sure what antique mall you mean just off Hwy 75 here in Plattsmouth. There is a "used" furniture store just off 75 by Burger King; do you mean there? Was in it a couple years ago, but do not recall pipes (wasn't even thinking pipes then). I will have to check all the antique shops in town.

Had my uppers out yesterday and the "temporary" upper denture installed. Today had the "final" lower denture installed. They both fit together well, and look pretty decent. Yesterday's extractions were absolutely remarkable for absence of pain! And even today there is only slight soreness. At least until I try to eat! Chewing is going to take awhile; hello soup! But at last I have teeth and the healing seems to be progressing.
