Jnat success

Just done my first hone from zero on one of my new jnats. Started by running the edge of my Heljestrand No 6 on a glass then worked through the whole progression (more or less) - botan, tenjou (skipped the mejiro), koma and as I don't have a tomo I used my other jnat to raise some slurry to finish.
Took me 45 minutes to do it as I was trying my new stone holder and sitting at the kitchen table - I always hand hone so it was a little awkward and rinsing everything between progressions whilst making sure not to drip on the clean floor was fun to say the least.
Hit a nice 4 off the stones but this was only slightly improved after 25 linen and 50 leather so a solid 4 when I shaved.
Resulting shave - well I decided to go for a BBS yesterday on a coti edge so not too much to shave and a little irritation but lovely and sharp and pretty much another BBS today. Got a red neck as I never do ATG on my neck two days in a row but other than that I'm happy as Larry!
Now I'm looking forward to my next honing experience, this time it'll be the other jnat I try out.
For info they are both unstamped vintage jnats, the ones I posted a month or so back, possibly nakayamas.

great! i am there with you..I did my first 2 nagura progressions last night and this morning.. this morning appears more successful than last night, likely because i skipped the botan as i thought the razor bevel was fine… but it was close, but not there, no consistent HHT across teh edge :cursing:. this morning i started a fresh razor with botan and cycled all the way through and it looks amazing when i HHT from both sides of the hair :w00t:

i am not in the deep end.. i am an ocean trench with lead weights in the cement blocks attached to my feet.

Man, I tried a JNAT edge for the first time ever the other day (Doc226 Honed)...what an experience!! The edge was sublime, and it definitely makes me want to "get my feet wet" !! (been purely a coticule guy up till now)

rockviper

I got moves like Jagger
Picking up a Jnat from the BST was definitely worth falling out of the 2013 Sabbatical for me

Hey bakerandbadger,

I just shaved with my henckels 16 and it was ridiculous. I could tell right after the first stroke how nice it was, after the first pass it was pretty much set. Almost no reason to do a second pass, the first was that close.I chose to do xtg next and I was pretty much kissing BBS. I stopped there and called it an evening as my wife was waiting for me.

I'm just waiting on my Koma to arrive before I dive in. Any suggestions for someone who've never honed a thing in his life?

Also, is there a trick to dulling on glass? How should I proceed there?
Can I just use a window in the kitchen? Or might I damage the glass here?

It's simple. Take a water glass. Set it on the counter. Take your razor and gently set the toe down the lip of the glass and without any extra weight beyond the weight of the blade, pull it toward you smoothly such that the entire blade runs across the lip of the glass.

This simple 1 second action will remove the shaving edge.

no need to use a window. you need a glass lip.. i used my coffee mug or water glass the other day..

i skipped the Koma to see what it would be like.. i don't think you need to wait.. just start... apparently you can skip the mejiro too...

as someone who has never honed a thing, i would suggest reading the cues for bevel set, understanding what the HHT and arm hair cutting really indicates and what to look for during the progression.. i found only with experience do you really understand the a-ha moment... it's really not that bad or hard, but it can be frustrating until you make the connections.. i find i am still at a point where i feel the need to do a couple more strokes per progression than many other state they do. but other also load soaps for way way longer than i do and it's just a personal thing.. not that lathering and honing are analogues in any other way except that getting it right is getting it right.

Incidentally, my koma just came in, so I'll get cracking tonight. I'm starting on a vintage blade I picked up. Should I start with my king 1k to reset the bevel? Or jump right into Botan? I did the thumbpad test and it's biting more than my untouched GD, so I think the bevel's okay. Am I reading this right?

I would tend to reset the bevel on vintage pick-ups - it may have been honed with tape and you'll have to eliminate the microbevel or it may have microchips and you'll kick yourself for spending an hour on the hone before realising it. It takes 5 minutes to reset the bevel and once it's done you're good to go for a long while.

but that's just my take on things

absolutely.. it's not difficult to reset the bevel on most straights ( hollows vs wedges). i learned the hard way recently that going back to basics isn't a bad thing...

BTW, the botan set the bevel for me on my full hollow henckels with relative ease. normally i use a suehiro 1.2K, chosera 1K, or DMT green.., but the botan took care of it
