Jnat Research

Although I'm not "ready" to actually squire and use Jnat/s yet I was interested in doing some academic learnin' on them. Currently when I read threads dealing with Jnats it is like reading Greek. Does anyone have any good links to resources I could use to become getting familiar with the lingo, their use, and such?

Well I'm so ignorant at this point that I don't even know what questions to ask. Once I get into the research ill likely have lots! Thanks for the links, much appreciated.

Find a reputable JNat dealer.

Find out what their most exclusive and high priced rock is.

And then repeat this simple little phrase:

That's funny, that's the same premise I use for razors, soaps, creams, hones, strops, etc! Glad something in the world of Jnats will be similar.

Lots of choices as jp said. I have a few that worked for me but since these stones are all unique, you may have a different result. You dont have to spend big. Talk to Maksim or Alex and tell them your situation and let them recommend wht they have for you. I dont think either of these gents will steer you wrong. Good luck.

I have just updated and filled out my Blog entry that you linked to above. I don't know if it will help the OP or not, just my contribution or what you might call a "mind purge".

A simple thought to keep in mind is that there are just two main types of stones in the mines of Kyoto, and that they are found right next to each other in those mine. Those types are Suita and Tomae. Each type has several variations with additional names but it all comes back to suita and tomae. What makes each of them more or less suitable for razors or tools/knives is the never ending story.

Good luck,
Alex

Driftwood: you must also become familiar with the Japanese idea of tatamae and honne

Basically, what is said, and what the underlying true meaning is. See here:http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honne_and_tatemae

So, what is said is that there are simply two types of JNats, what is actually meant is that you will require two sets of thesauruses, Japanese to English dictionaries, a field guide, a seeing eye dog, and some plain old dumb luck to really be able to figure out what the heck is what with theses rocks.

:wink2:

Ok that really helps. I went to the wiki link and "I'm not there yet". As of about an hour ago the only thing I knew about Jnats was that they likely came from Japan!

That intrigues me a lot, does this mean I have a problem. About an hour ago I thought my next hone purchase was going to be a Thuri, but now, not so sure!

Starting with JNATs does not need to be complicated. I started with a Shoubudani Type 100 from JNS. It is inexpensive compared to other JNATs and they are really great stones. You can use one with a slurry stone (tomo) as a finisher, just as you would with a Thuri....you don't have to worry about all the naguras just yet....just get a cheap JNAT, use it as a finisher, and see if you like it (I bet you will!!)

Not hard
Get stone, get DMT card, rub card on stone, rub razor on stone, strop and shave

I like the cut of your jib! I didn't figure the actual act of honing would be any different for any other rock, it's the figuring out what all the rocks names mean. For example Norton 1K, 4K, 8K, Coti, bam honing progression. There seems to be about 1000 different Jnats, and that's BEFORE the damn slurry stones!!!!!

Ya so what stone do I need to get started. I've got 325k through to 13,000k in synthetics and two coti's, assuming I want an alternative to my current finishing regime, what am I looking for in the Jnat world?

So, a fella only needs to get this one JNat stone?
Yep, and it lasts a LOOOOONG time.
