JKS 10k stone impressions

I wanted to throw my impressions out about the JKS 10K in this thread.

Under the Microscope @ 45x the JKS 10 K left a bright mirror like finish to the edge. I asked Robert to strop the razor, he used a .025 CO on a paddle strop.

This was the best straight shave I have ever had in my on and off straight career, the edge was buttery smooth.

As a point of reference I preferred this edge over the Swatty 3 line and the Kitayama 8k , as well as the mystery honing that I have gotten from other honers..

I would say its well worth looking into.:thumbup1:

Jim - would you believe I've never heard of a JKS 8K? Would you share more information about this hone? I'm very, very fond of the Takenoko 8K and Naniwa 10K but wouldn't mind adding something else to the mix.

Thanks for starting this thread, Jim! I have been contemplating a Nani 10/12k, but was curious about the JKS 10k.

The JKS 10000 is available from Dave Martells shop.

Many of the Knife forum regulars have dropped the Naniwa and Chosera for this stone.

What else can I say>?

Just as full disclosure, Dave is a friend of mine.

.

HAD enabler! Now I'll have to do a side by side comparison of it versus the Naniwa 10K.

I believe Dave is also a fan of the Takenoko 8K, so I like his taste in hones. Is this stone something he developed or something he distributes?

He does sell them, I do not know the back story. Perhaps he will stop in?

I do apologize, as I do not frequent any knife forums, and I'm sure these questions have all been discussed there. The description seems to indicate that this stone has very nice feedback and feel, two qualities I'm meant to understand are what make the Naniwa's so popular for use with razor sharpening, for example. I wonder, does this stone suffer from incessant lapping and swarf issues as do the Naniwas? I see that this stone is recommended to be soaked, where I am meant to understand that the Naniwas can be used with only water poured on top.

They look like they're out of stock right now.

Is this stone available from other retailers? Is this a generic stone only sold through JKS, as the name might imply?

Thanks!

Hi folks,
First off I hope that I'm not violating any rules here by answering questions but if so please feel free to moderate me, I'll go quietly. :biggrin1:

The JKS 10k is a factory direct stone that we purchase from Japan. It is made for a stone company that retails it for about $65 more than we do. We get it labeled only with the grit rating and plain box. It's a magnesia method stone that was originally used for high end optical glass polishing and then found it's way to tool sharpeners. When I first tried it I didn't care for it because it refined the edge too much, keep in mind I'm talking about knife edges, while later on I was to find that it's all about pairing it up with other stones to get what you want out of it. I've found that using it with a specific combination of other stones I now get the best edges on knives that I've ever got before.

I've honed my own straights with it comparing it to all my other stones and have settled on the fact that I like it the best. Keep in mind that I'm no honemeister nor do I have all the great high end hones that a lot of you have for your straights. I'm just going off of what feels the best, leaves me with the cleanest shave with the least time spent, and yeah less cuts too. :)

The biggest problem for me and this stone has been in getting it and having it available for sale. We get the left-overs (not 2nds - the extras) from a run so this means that the main company gets first dibs and we get what's left. I have a standing order of 2 cases (24 stones) to send to me when available or to send any amount up to that but we're lucky to get 12 a month and then they sell almost instantly leaving us with nothing for another month. Currently we're out of them again.

Thanks to Jim for mentioning this and to everyone who has expressed interest.

Dave

Dave, thanks for posting about the hone! You allude that pairing it with some hones might work better than others. Would you elaborate on that in general and your experiences in particular? My intention, of course, isn't to grill you but to pick your brain.

I don't care- I'm still saving my pennies for that 10K chocera! :tongue_sm

Trouble is, every time I accumulate enough pennies to buy something else on my list, I tend to spend them.

Don't forget the 5k! Those two go together like peanut butter and jelly. They should be a boxed set. :biggrin1:

I see a few hones make multiple lists. I've never tried a Kitayama or a Suehrio Rika. Urge to purchase hones rising :blushing:. Of course new hones would require new razors to sharpen...

I've just started using the 10k naniwa. i must say i am impressed the edge is as smooth as a natural stone. boy does it cut well and polish.

Wherever there's a hunk of metal in need of a sharp edge, he'll be there.

The chocera 5K is one of the few stones I sold. It's a great stone, but I couldn't find a place for it. At the time, I had a Shapton Pro 5K and other 3K, 6K, and 8K stones, so it didn't really fill any need, and it brought in enough to buy some other nice toys. I did keep the 3K chocera stone, though- it's my favorite "bridge" from medium to fine.

The Chosera 3k is a great stone. For double bevels I would choose it over the 5k but for singles I like the 5k instead unless it's a deba then the 3k would be my pick. Splitting hairs really. :001_smile
