It was a year ago today when I had my first shave with a straight razor so I decided to use the same setup I did that day. It was a pretty nice shave but reminded me that I'm not really a fan of the 830 for soaps.

Sunday, January 8, 2012
  1. Prep: Hot shower; Yardley bath bar; hand strop blade
  2. Coffee: Locally roasted, fresh ground Costa Rican w/ cream
  3. Lather: Speick cream - face lather
  4. Brush: Vulfix 2234
  5. Razor: Gem Heavy Flat Top
  6. Blade: Pella SS PTFE coated (3); 3 passes
  7. Post: Cold water rinse; Kiehl's Balm
Cream Annihilation has begun. I really do enjoy the Speick cream but I'm honestly more excited about picking up the stick after I work through some of my creams. Great scent and wonderful performance as always from Speick. The Vulfix whipped up a very thick and cushy lather on my face and that amazing smell just enveloped my entire face.

Shave Rating - Splendid! God Bless!

Blue Collar Shave

Warm Water Splash
Ingram Shave Cream
New Forest #2211 Finest Silvertip
R. Helliwell Crystal 9/16ths
Neil Miller .. 60/60
Witch Hazel .. store brand
PE RE JA Limon Kolonyasi AfterShave Splash

There are no degrees or honoraria hanging from my wall, so I often like to celebrate my roots as a Skilled Tradesman... I think today's shave and choice of products exemplifies this fact.
The little Crystal ain't pretty... not even cute, but it doesn't realize that fact and shaves like the "Big Boys.."
PE RE JA Kolonyasi, New Forest brushes, and Ingram cream are all inexpensive products that just plain work without a fancy pedigree..

The background depicts a Field Gordon setter pointing a Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa Umbellus), and holding steady to flush... Just doin' his job!

Here's to manual labor..

Pre-Shave: Hot shower
Brush: Simpson Chubby 1
Razor: Henckels Friodur 721/2
Strop: 40/60 Neil Miller Linen/Kanayama Cordovan
Soap: La Toja Stick
After shave: Nivea Balm
Results: Testing the new Thuri today, as I did with the MK I gave it a few strokes on the 8K to kill the original finish, then 10 strokes w/slurry and 10 on plain water. The edge was nice and smooth, on par with the SS12K, but I believe it got more potential, being a stainless blade it might be in need of a few more strokes. I will try to give it five more of each before next shave and see if it can lift the edge a little bit more. All in all a very nice, comfortable and close shave.
