JACK BLACK Beard Lube: Stand alone or Base

Just purchased Jack Black Beard Lube. Product is more of a gel. For those who use, do you utilize as a stand along product? Or, do you top it with a shaving cream?

For those who use as a stand alone what is your impression?

I've used it both ways. I tried it stand-alone at first, and found it adequate but not as nice as any of my creams. Now I use it as a pre-shave to hold moisture on my face while I whip up a lather with my brush. It only takes a little that way, so one bottle lasts a long time.

I used it when I was cart shaving only, it worked okay (I much preferred Billy Jealousy). I've got a tube or two still and didn't like it at all with a DE razor. I might give it a go as a pre-shave, sounds interesting.
