What's new

Jabon de Reuters

Anyone know anything about this bath/face soap?

I just got some and it seems very nice. Might be a new fav. Store had exactly one bar!

is this bar made in peru ?

I think it said made in USA on the label and maybe made in New York. Lots of Spanish and little English on the label though. My bad, BTW, no "s" on the end of "Reuter."

Here is a photo. The back and sides of the package have lots more text. It appears to be a Lanman & Kemp-Barlcay/Murray & Lanman product, although I have some Florida Water soap by those folks that is clearly marked made in Peru. (Soap has little FW scent, by the way. Nothing really to recommend it.)

I am still liking the Jabon de Reuter, btw. Very moisturising (sp?). Almost too moisturising. Perhaps a little "greasy/oily." I figured out that it smells a bit like a cold cream my mother used to use, but I bet side by side the similarity would be far from exact.

Thanks for responding!

lanman & kemp are putting out cheap reproductions of famous soaps from the 20's-30's that were made by murray-lanman...these bars are made from pig tallow in peru (producto peruano),they also are putting out sandal, florida water ,and patcholi bars as well , the labels are repros of the originals ..

Wow, impressive catch on the "Producto Puruano." Thanks so much for the information.

Is pork tallow necessarily bad? The Jabon de Reuter seems very creamy to me--a nice texture and lather--and has a nice, as I described, retro, cold cream kind of smell, which must somehow push some buttons from the past with me, because it seems nice.

The made in Peru Florida Water soap was much better marked and marketed as made in Peru, and was pretty much useless. Not much aroma, much less FW aroma, not very good lather. Sort of a hard, not very slippery, not very effective at cleaning, and certainly not moisterizing soap that I would think of as more a detergent than anything as natural and pleasent as a tallow soap.

Thanks again!

I had the same experience, but in fairness they cost $1.25 a bar in san francisco....if you get real lucky ,SOME of the walgreens carry genuine heno de pravia ,by piug, 3 pack soap for $2.49.. a fantastic price and cheaper than the peruvian repros !! ....this stuff is first class, and is the true heno de pravia made in spain...the scent is wonderful, and is an all vegetable formula..XXXXXX,,,,,,,,,,,,,I retract part of this !! seems like I really got lucky ! the 3 pack I paid $2.49 was supposed to be opened and selling for $2.49 PER BAR !! wish I would have bought a case that day ! anyway,it is a large bar and it is worth the price, great lather and superb scent

heno de pravia ,by piug sounds great! I am not trying to save $1.24!

Still not sure what is wrong with pork tallow. We seem to seek out tallow in shaving soap around here, why not in bath soap? Slippery and moisterizing from what I can tell. Seems to do the job. Unfortunate if there were once better versions and I do not like the idea of M&L misrepresenting what they are selling, if they are. Darn hard to find the made in Peru text on that bar!

the leftover fat from butchering pigs is melted down and used as lard for cooking and for soaps..it is much cheaper than palm oil and olive oil,and most other vegetable oils..it was in many fast foods years ago,but in the late 70's-early eighties agri-business figured out that the leftover fat from cattle butchering was going mainly for candles and a few other items, and that they could super whip it,add a few chemicals, and replace vegetable oil completely...today almost all the cheap "fruit pie" type of fake bakery snacks are made with "beef fat" or "beef tallow"....the result? look at the horrendous amount of saturated fat in those small "pies" and other "treats"...leftover butchering fats are cheap..they can make good lather, but what are you really paying for?

Okay gents, let's resurrect another old post. I was over at the Lanman site and as usual had to look at the soaps. I was checking out the Florida Water when this caught my eye.

I had looked at it once before but did not check into it much. I queried for a review and of course this site popped up! This thread interests me but I wondered if someone would offer up a description of the scent?

Also, I noted the poor experience with the Florida Water soap. I was really looking at that but if the scent is poor, there is no reason to pursue it. BTW, I wish some home brewer would come up with a great pomade in this scent.
