Ivory Ivory Ivory!

I need a new ivory dealer guys. Any good sources? I'm trying to avoid the dealers that charge like $60+ for a set of scale blanks - it gets cheaper than that and so I'm looking for the "fair" dealers.

thanks

"Is this ok?" ?

These 2 responses are more acceptable than cursing or pics of curses? Or a huge zit?

Daflorc asked a reasonable question. It may not suit your tastes, but show some respect.

For the record to anyone else who might feel inclined to post here;

No one here supports or promotes the illegal trade in Ivory.
The fact of the matter is that there are current legal avenues for people to obtain pre-ban Ivory. If that fact bothers you, I suggest you contact law makers who can address that issue specifically.
Until then, members discussing legal trade in Ivory are free to do so as it is not an illegal activity.

There will be zero tolerance on this subject.

Don't do it.

Must have missed something and that's ok. I don't know any ivory dealers, however how much legal ivory is on the market? I know that ivory collected before a certain date is legal but how much is there? I would consider acquiring an ivory scaled razor but is there a way that a consumer can be assured that the ivory is legal? Not an attack just questions from the curious.

You have to do a modicum of research into the individual dealer you are considering. How much advertising do they do and how public are they? Do they state that they can prove provenance?
As with all things, a guy selling stuff quietly on the side is probably best avoided.

Now lets get back to the OP's question.

Wow, I must've missed a [currently deleted and possibly ignorant] post on here. Yes, I am definitely talking about obtaining legal ivory harvested before the ban in 1972. Its out there, in some quantity, but it can be hard to find the dealers. Its not like there is a constant flow of the stuff - it's usually cut from large tusks that come from estates or private collectors selling it to dealers, from what I know. Casus4844, I was using boone trading for my pre-ban ivory for awhile, but have since found it cheaper, and that's really what I'm looking for. I've never had any problems working with boone, other than the price. Thanks for the input though!

Cheaper?.. hmm...I'll be on the lookout then. And slash.. a 7 day ivory gold dollar set? That would be pretty :)

Hah! I started to do one a year or two ago and that project got sidelined and I was more looking at ebony scales anyhow. I am on a ship now, and have 5 GD66's with me that I have already de-shouldered and breadknifed. Been thinning the first one the last couple of days. It would be nice if all 5 came out good enough but I would be content with 3 keepers in this batch. This part takes a while, without a belt sander, the thinning of tang and spine. And the next step, sanding the blade thin and smooth. I am going to try to match them closely on blade width and bevel angle, which I will slim down to about 16-1/2 degrees. I am putting a lot of thought into functionality and longevity, as well as ease of honing now and a hundred years from now. I don't want these blades to EVER have the dreaded "heel hook" or the tapered nose so many over-loved vintage blades show. They won't be Gold Dollars anymore, though. I am striving for sort of a Dubl Duck feel to the blade and in fact I think I will shamelessly lift that and call mine, "Dubl Donk", with twin grinning donkeys instead of the twin ducks on the DD. Probably I will electro-etch the blade. Maybe have the tangs engraved. I think they will deserve ivory.

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to have ivory cut REALLY thin, and laminate it onto bone or ebony? Also, has anybody tried melting or hammering 24k gold into incised designs in ivory?

I think the vintage ivory scales were cut so thin to avoid wasted material. They crack pretty easily at that thickness. I make my ivory scales twice as thick as vintage ones, if for no other reason than peace of mind. I also think that laminating ivory to bone would de-value the ivory, but it would probably look pretty cool laminated to ebony. I personally wouldn't do it - ivory is beautiful in itself, and strong enough alone. I only do laminations to add strength to brittle burl scales. As far as inlaying gold into ivory - I've never seen it done - but it sounds like an awesome idea! I've seen silver inlayed into horn, and silver inlayed into ivory, but never gold.

Clearly missed some ignorant comments.
I'm now looking at some ivory scales to replace the oak ones on my helje 31 hhmmmmmm :wink2:

Excuse my ignorance for I haven't really priced ivory scales or not, but is $60 for a set of ivory scales reasonable?

Seeing that blanks from the link I listed are $30 its a good deal.

That's the one's I was talking about. :wink2:

*Edit* Just went to the website again & looked at Walrus bone & ivory. It appears that if one wanted, one could make scales from the penile bone of a walrus.
Bet you'd be the only kid on the block with one of those! LOL!!

$60 for two pieces of ivory which makes one set of SR scales is not a bad price. It seems to be the typical price that I have found. But, because I restore these things for profit, I look for cheaper material costs, and I have found dealers who sell it for cheaper. For instance, one dealer (who has run out of stock currently) charged me on average $30-40 for enough ivory for one set of scales.

I'm very interested in a source for legal ivory. Subscribed.

boonetrading.com is a very reputable dealer, and scales will cost you about $60 (buy the blanks and make them yourself)

Unless you have a surgical precision band saw and can split their 1/8" thick blanks to make a set of vintage-esque thin scales - then it'd be $30 per set of scales :)

I also know a guy who has a handful of mint CV Heiljestrand ivory scales for sale, already made, for less than $100 a set. PM me if interested in his info.

Also referred to as Oosik or Baculum, it's a very traditional and often used material for knife handles and other decorative items. I've seen razor scales and pistol grips made of it.
