What's new

It's Time to play GUESS THAT STONE

It's in a hand carved mahogany box. Glued in. Estimate mid 19th early 20th century. Was shipped from UK. Scrapes rather than shatters (has deep scratches in it likely from a chisel). Was used as an oilstone but is 100% nonporous (oil wiped right off with soapy sponge). 7x1.5"

Now, GUESS... THAT.... STONE!

Hmm id say charnley forest or hmm i think there might be a devonshire oilstone, possibly tavistock.

A quick google is in order for the correct name brb.

Ok might be a tam o shanter.

Ok after a quick snoop id say it's a tam o shanter, could be wrong but it's as close as i can get.

Thanks. BBW was what I suspected. I've cut it out of the box (was cemented in), and it's 7x1.5x0.25" Identical pattern on the bottom. Slurry matches that of my BBW's.

If I were to speculate about its past, I would say that it was a natural Belgian combo stone but the coticule layer is worn off.

Doubt it. There was no trace of coti anywhere on it, and it had honing wear and oil residue covering it. It was used for the BBW as a hone. Ardennes seems to want to take credit for "discovering" BBW as a honing stone (as per the pamphlet they send with their coti's), but I've seen lots of evidence that is not the case.

Verrry interesting. I wonder if Bart has read this thread yet.

A neat little thing I've found while lapping the hone wear out of it. It has the patternless black (dalmation) speckling some of my coti's have had. It's a lot harder to notice obviously because it's basically slightly darker purple on a dark purple hone, but there is a small patch of it on there. I assume this is the same stuff as the veins Bart has talked about (Magnesium if I remember right). I've never seen it in BBW before, then again I've never really looked close at a BBW before.

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about on one of my Coti's.

I would not be surprised if there were as many variations in BBWs as in coticules. I have one that has white spots in it (coticule inclusions?), it is very fast.
