Item of the Week 9/2 - Slant Razor

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
Hello to all.

This will be the twenty-eighth in a series of "item of the week" threads that I am promoting in the general shave discussion forum.
The rules:

  1. It is very simple. Use the item of the week for the week that it is scheduled and post your thoughts on that item in its thread.
  2. Everything else in your shave line-up may be rotated at will, but keep the featured item of the week as part of each shave.
  3. The weeks will start on Monday and end on Saturday. Sunday could be a free day, or an overlap day for the next week or whatever.

The twenty-eighth featured item of the week will be Slant Razor - Your Choice.

Ok, first pitch, IOTW, slant is Merkur 39c
Actually first time to use this fellow. Long handle is nice.
Prep with shower and Proraso preshave balm
Proraso green shave cream with Omega silvertip
Merkur with fresh Super Max blade
A little aggressive right off the bench, one little knick
After, Proraso AS lotion and some Creed GIT

Excellent! Just got my Ikon head Friday, and had planned to test all week anyway. Inspired by Sarimento 1's picture (nice B&W work, BTW) I think I'll make it a Proraso week too:001_smile

This could not come at a more perfect time. I had planned on starting to use my brand new merkur 37C anyways. This morning was my first shave with it. First impression was pretty good.

Hello all,

This week is well timed to help me wrestle with the new Ikon Slant.

$iSlantCellaAstra.jpg

This afternoon's shave was the best so far, but I'm really struggling. Swapped out to an Astra SP to see if a different blade would draw less blood/irritation.

AOS Sandalwood Pre-shave oil in towel prep.
Cella applied with an Omega 20107 brush, about 1/3 bowl and 2/3rds face lathered during experiments with the Cella.
Ikon Slant with Astra SP, three pass shave.
Alum followed by AOS Sandalwood ASB for a finish.
DFS, no cuts or weepers, but a couple of older cuts/weepers were thinking really hard about re-opening.
General irritation along jawlines and below.

Really struggling. But we've got lots of week ahead to figure it out.

Well, started with the 37C and a Feather blade on its 15th shave. Proraso soap provided a great lather. My favourite razor and a great shave completed.

Hoffritz
C.O. Bigelow
7 O'clock Green (India)
Vintage restore brush
Lilac Vegetal

I had forgotten just how efficient the old slant was for me. Three passes and I achieved the elusive BBS! No irritation or nicks. Looking forward to tomorrow's shave with it.

Second inning for me, IOTW, Monday, Labor Day, Sep. 2nd
Prep with shower and T&H preshave oil
Tabac sample puck, with very well-suited Vie Long horse hair brush
Merkur slant 39C with Super Max stainless
Two really smooth passes, the Tabac is slicker than snot, hardly felt like a razor, plus little touchup
Way more comfortable than yesterday, I figure the blade just needed breaking in.
After, ABC apricot hull a/s balm then splash of Hoyts cologne

ps, thanks folks for the nice comments on the Proraso stuff yesterday, lot of fun!

hmmm, i'm wondering if the ikon slant is more pronounced than the merkur 39c.
as best i can tell, the 39c is about a 10 degree angle offset.
would a greater angle create a more aggressive shave??
just curious!

Playing catchup...My iKon Slant arrived yesterday.

Yesterday...

I returned from Texas today, and my iKon Slant Head was waiting. Tonight I paired it with a Weber Classic Handle. I was a bit nervous about the aggressiveness because of my tremors. I used Mitchell's Wool Fat and a Simpson Special Pure Badger.
The shave began so smoothly, made the mistake of slovenliness, and cut myself rather badly next to my top lip. It took a while to stop the bleeding, and was my fault, no blame on the razor.
In the end I came away with a very smooth shave, one Nick, and about 5 weepers. I am going to have to develop my technique. But the shave itself, was great. More shaves to come.

And today:

Second shave...better. I was more careful. My shave was a little uneven, I need to adjust my technique...but the shave itself is smooth and close. Only one weeper today, and reopened one of yesterday's. I think I am going to like this razor a lot. I started with Gillette Yellows. I'm going to try it with a Personna Blue, next (I think the travelling Cobra arrives tomorrow, so I'm taking a few days off for that.). Fellow B.O.S.S. members, what blades are you using?

Another perfect shave with the Hoffritz, Williams with a dollop of Cremo in it, Kent BK2, the same 7'Oclock Green. Mennen Skin Bracer.

IOTW, Tuesday, Sep 3rd, Slant week
Prep with shower and SMN pre-post balm
SMN cream with T&H silvertip badger
Merkur 39c with Super Max (3x), really nice again today
After, SMN pre-post balm and SMN tabacco toscano
