I apply oil before I run a comb or brush through it. It helps to protect the hair and makes de-tangeling easier. I do occasionally have to blow dry a wave from my left side, and that happens after oil and balm, mainly because the balm is what I am trying to "set" with the blow dryer...
Itchy, prickly, uncomfortable beard

In my experience, you get accustomed to growing in a beard and it won't bother you anymore. If you can last 3 weeks, you're in the clear.
I never notice any itchy sensations anymore when i grow it out, but the first few times it drove me nuts.

After it grows out a bit, when you scratch your beard, it makes you look contemplative, thoughtful and wise....
Honest Amish Beard balm was my savior. Apply it ad brush it through with a board brush. Dont use your hair brush.
