Italian

Why do you think Italian and quality male grooming are so closely associated? Everyone seems to have had an Italian barber, Italian Barber online, Proraso, etc.

I mostly think unions when I think Italian, mostly because my shop steward is second generation Italian-Canadian and a while ago Italy use to have really strong unions.... and economy...

I really have no idea but my first guess would be mafia movies (Godfather, good fellas etc.). The head guy of the mafia always seems to make a fuss about being well groomed.

I didn't notice a special connection between Italian and quality male grooming. The English connection is probably stronger.

The Romans had high standards of hygiene and an advanced sanitation system compared to the rest of Europe at that time. My guess would be that it started with them and continued through the centuries since.

From a man who certainly knows a thing or eight about indoor plumbing.

I'm thinking it might have something to do with Italian guys typically having dark, thick, heavy hair and beards. Traditionally they have probably always needed to shave frequently and use some kind of product to keep their hair groomed.
