What's new

It looks like Penhaligon's soap is all gone until July...

Only EF in a wooden bowl is left at Vintage Blades. Not even Penhaligons.com has any left.

I was just about to order some BB in a wooden bowl, which was available a few days ago. I should have ordered earlier :frown:

Bye bye tallow...

Man this hurts...I bought the bowl/soap two months ago and was contemplating getting a refill but I couldn't spend the 30 bucks...too many other purchases.

With my recent $200 plus purchase from Jim, I couldn't add it to the list...and now its gone...

If you look up Jim's post on Floris soaps, they used to be Tallow based shave goodness. Apparently, after their reformulation their soap lost Tallow and went into the crapper and became a horrible shave soap.

Has anyone confirmed with a vendor in the know that the next thing that will be hitting the shelves is the newer formulation?.

If not, keep checking the usual sites for Penhaligon's, perhaps some of the tallow formulation will still show up before the pipeline is squeezed completely dry.

According to VintageBladesLLC.com, the stuff coming in July will be the new formulation.

Out of curiosity, if tallow works so well, why would Penhaligon's get rid of it? Not everyone is a vegetarian...

I have heard the following in no particular order as being reasons for why many British soap makers are transitioning to plant based alternatives:

1. EU health regs make it more difficult to use tallow in products nowadays.

2. Tallow has become more expensive than the alternative plant based fats.

3. Pens specifically went away from tallow because they have been granted a warrant by HRH Prince Charles, who happens to be an advocate for animals.

3a. It's all Prince Charles's fault.

I am sorry you are not being politically correct enough here. If there are people that are offended that Tallow product are being use then the rest of us are not allowed to use that vial stuff. Fascism takes may forms.

Oops, I forgot. Let me add that:

I am playing armchair quarterback here, and its just a theory I have been thinking about, but I think since the South Asia consumer market is becoming a more predominant player in the World economy, I believe the industry is naturally preparing to more aggressively market & better position themselves in this burgeoning market, which means catering to the needs of the consumer who are predominantly vegetarian.

For instance all, one has to turn to is Keyline Brands as an example. Keyline Brands was purchased in 2005 by the Grodej Group of Mumbai in 2005. You may ask yourself, who is Keyline Brands? and why should I care? They snapped up Erasmic, which as we all know has since moved there shave sticks from tallow formulation to a vegetable based formulation.
As well, I am not certain but I have heard cartridge razors may have already started to lead the charge & appear in this market as well.
Rest assured Gillette would be leading that charge.

Anyways I may be reaching here & its just my 2 cents,

but maybe its high time to go into ... full-on-hoard-mode now :w00t::lol:

Damn. This blows.

Good thing I have two tallow-based EF pucks in reserve. :w00t: But after that they'll be history.

I don't think it becam "horrible" ... check with Jim about that one, but I think I remember his opinion as the new stuff being "below average" or thereabouts ... not 'horriible" but certainly not the equal of other well-thought-of triple milled soaps out there ... a real bummer when (again, Jim's opinion about a soap I never tried) the old tallow formulation was the best available anywhere.

(Oh, Floris did recently introduce a "#89" shave soap in non-tallow ... this being a new addition to their line ... and it ... couldn't lather. :001_huh: That one, yes, "terrible".

I e-mailed Penhaligon's last April (2008) about tallow-based shave soap ... at that time the answer was that
a. the shave soap was then still tallow-based
b. the shave soap would not be reformulated "until next year" (being 2009)
c. all other Pens soaps are already tallow-free.
