It lives! Update on 5-speed toggle that wouldn't adjust

Previous thread here

I've been diligently soaking this razor in hot water for about a month now with a little success. I decided to try a different approach and gave it a good, long soaking in penetrating oil. Low-and-behold it now has full movement and works perfectly!

Thank you to all who helped me understand more about this razor, especially Tom whom I had many emails back and forth between. I am overjoyed to have brougth this razor back from the dead and it is now a very prized part of my collection!

For a little photo proof, here's the razor just minutes ago with settings 5/3/1 and the blade gap

Thanks all! I can't wait to give it a spin tomorrow. Now the next question...do I replate it? Part of me wants it to look shiny and beautiful again. But part of me says no, it is too rare of a piece.

Enjoy it for a while.

Getting it replated means it will be gone for a month or two at least.

I don't know the value vs. cost of it. That's for you to decide, but for know you can at least use it.

Indeed. It certainly wouldn't be an immediate thing, partially because funds won't allow it. I just want to actually be able to use the razor and get to know the settings and how they differ from my beloved Fatboy. It will have competition with my Tradere SB coming early next week though.

Once again Congrats.
I'll admit right up front that I have a soft spot for this model and Toggles in general.
These 1-5 models are seen so seldom they almost always command big bucks. Add to that they mark the dawn of the Gillette Adjustable so their historical value is a consideration also. Those two elements, "in my book", tend to come first over twinkle, but that is me.
Either way it is your razor and all your efforts have breathed new life into it.

Congrats on getting it back working! It's scary to think someone would have thought it was a broken lost cause and just thrown it away. Good work on reviving it!

Congrats, I fixed a few members Toggles and took a few of mine apart, i know they are a delicate piece of machinery.

I'm not a big fan of replating vintage razors. I like the original to be the original. If I wanted shiny and new looking, I'd buy a new razor. I also detect a little less razor design detail after razors have been replated. Maybe that's from my eyes only, but I see it.

Jeff, I respect your views. But not all members believe in originality like you do, they prefer to replate so they can use it as if it was new again. If i get a rare razor i would not replate:001_wub:
