What's new

It hurts, man!

I'm trying a Trig blade in a Merkur HD. The first shave worked out quite well. Today, my second shave was very different. my face was well hydrated, and I had a good lather from the same soap I've been using nearly every day. I went WTG and XTG as usual and it felt fine. Initial indications were that it was a normal uneventful shave, but a few hours later things were not good. My skin itself feels fine so it doesn't seem like razor burn, and it wasn't even a very close shave. If I rub my face WTG, there is no discomfort, but if I rub my face ATG, it feels like I 'm rubbing shards of glass into my face. I don't think the blade was dull since I didn't feel any pulling or drag, although the Trig didn't strike me as the sharpest blade on the first shave. Is this what is meant by blade smoothness? I really want to avoid this outcome, so I'm trying to diagnose the cause.

Don't know about Trig blades haven't used one yet, but it sounds like you might have sensitive skin which will show up any weakness in your setup, if you haven't tried one yet then i would recommend using a feather blade, yes they are very sharp but if used carefully they give a very nice smooth irritation free shave, just right for sensitive skin as it will cut the hair without much fuss.

I have tried Feathers and they worked very well for me, other than one small spot of razor burn at jawline once. I took the burn as proof that Feathers deserve respect. I get more consistently comfortable results with the sharper blades I've tried (Astra, Russian green 7 oclocks, Feather) especially when I go for a very close shave. But the Trig didn't feel dull, and I wasn't even going for a very close shave. It didn't feel especially sharp, but definitely not dull either.

I'm still looking for a go-to blade. I have some Sharks, Lords, Blue Birds and Derbys I haven't tried yet. Since Feathers aren't the cheapest blade, what are some other very sharp blades that are cheap in bulk that I should try? I know that Astra's and 7 o'clock Russian greens are around $20 for 100 and so far they seem the best candidates for a go-to blade.

You will find that the derby's are pretty respectable and can be bought quite cheaply in bulk purchase.
