What's new

It ALMOST got away

Being new I am possibly more curious, naïve, and adventurous to trying new things as well as disregarding them from my possession or rotation. Recently I decided I had found the razor that I will be using for the long haul (Razorock SLAB). It does a great job at what I want and until someone steers me into trying something else, it will be my go-to for a long time.

That being said, I had recently decided I was going to sell a razor I did not think I was going to ever use/need anymore, my fatip. I used it a couple times and it worked great, but it was a bit on the aggressive side for me to want to use every day. I noticed after a couple days of continuous use my skin became more and more sensitive. Now I am sure part of it could be bad angle, lather etc, I am not denying that. However, my go-to just didn't cause these issues.

Over the weekend I didn't shave at all, I had 3 days growth and figured it would be a perfect opportunity to see how this thing worked chopping down some long growth. It did a phenomenal job on my face. It cut those hairs down so effortlessly and smoothly, coupled with a feather blade the hairs where no match and I had a very close shave today.

Though this will not be my everyday razor, I am definitely hanging onto it now. Whenever I have more than a days growth, I am going to reach for this now. I have read others do the same with more aggressive razors and now see why. I needed to give my little buddy one last chance of redemption and he did so with flying colors.

Have any of you had similar experiences with anything you have tried and revisited? I am hanging onto some Astra's so that down the road I can revisit them as well because when just starting out I used them exclusively and did not like them one bit. I would like to one day have a better experience with them.

This has been my experience with blades especially. I started out with a nice big sample pack and took notes about the performance of each blade. Reviewing them, there were some pretty bad ones in the mix. Since then, I've revisited them multiple times and there are far fewer blades with such bad ratings. The best conclusion I can come to is that my technique has improved, mostly by becoming more consistent. I have actually found that I can get a good shave about almost any blade I throw in.

Out of my razors I have a bit mixed feelings about my R41. That is the razor I learned the right technique with and it was my only razor for a half of a year. I never was able to shave daily with it (unless I did a one pass shave, which it is good at). I am willing to sell it as I want to try a slant. Still I am using it (latest today). I know your mixed feeling.

One of the biggest mistakes I made was buying a sample pack with one blade each. I tried a couple blades that I didn't like but may have been because I was new and I didn't know how to manipulate the razor to show their potential. I may revisit some, wish I did as you did and keep records.

I too have thought about trying a slant and may very well one day but im not entirely convinced that u would benefit from one with my current setup. As I now have a mild and aggressive razor for certain duties, maybe you could buy one that is a bit less aggressive and do as I do? I remember when I was first selecting a razor I almost bought that razor as I didn't want to "grow out" of a milder one. I recently got a friend of mine to try de shaving and I had to talk him out of it being his first razor after he did some research on his own.
