Is White Horse Hair softer than Regular Horse Hair?

I have a few Vie Long Horse Hair Brushes and the white horse hair seems to be softer than the regular brown horse hair. Is this just my imagination or has anyone else noticed this?

On a side note, I'm really impressed with the quality of the Vie Long Brushes so far. For the price they really are a quality product.

The mane / tail hair ratios are different for the white (and dyed) and brown hair. The mane hair is demonstrably softer.

The white (and dyed) is 50/50 mane/tail, while the brown is 35/65. Assuming the same loft and shape, the white should always be softer.

I agree that Vie-Long produces an excellent product, and I particularly like their unconventional handles. I am eager to try one of their silvertip or two-band brushes. They supposedly source their badger hair from the same suppliers as Plisson.

If you have not done so already, give a look at giftsandcare.com, they carry the largest selection of Vie-Long's (G&C's office is near VL's factory), they provide a great deal of information on the brushes, Juan, the proprietor is friendly and professional, and they are a B&B endorsed vendor. If you order, check out G&C in the Vendor Forum and don't forget the discount codes.

G&C will also let you customise the loft of your brush when you order!

Fantastic customer service & 10% discount... Can't be bad!

This is exactly the conclusion I have reached myself. My fourth Vie-Long, a 24 mm white natural with loft set at 50 mm, is my favorite and one of four stick lathering brushes in my den.

I use horsehair reins for my horseback riding endeavors. My experience is:
Tail is prickly. You don't want tail hair reins. Stiff and prickly, and you'll need to wear gloves.
Mane is much softer. Colors are the best, white is lighter and stiffer than the colors(black, sorrel, chestnut, etc.). White hair is also lighter. It takes a greater volume of white hair to make the same weight.

So I wasn't just imaging the softer White Hair vs the others. Good to know. I also feel it holds more water. I do really like the way they are made. For what could be considered a lower cost brush they are well worth the money. I can't say that I like them more or less than my Badgers but I don't avoid them in the rotation.
