What's new

Is Trumper's soap not popular anymore?

I cracked out some Trumper's soap I've had for a long time in the closet.
I used to love this stuff. Actually, truth be told, I still do really like it.

However, I haven't seen a thread pop up on it for a while.
It seems that Trumper soap isn't popular anymore.

I will agree that there are a lot of soaps that are just as good and better for cheaper.
Still, what happened to Trumper's?

Not sure if you have the old tallow version or the reformulated veggie version. I've only tried the reformulated version and it is mediocre at best.

Mine is a couple of years old. It doesn't list Tallow as one of the ingredients.

The reformulated non-tallow GFT soaps are simply not very good when compared to other choices in the marketplace. And it is not simply the fact that they went to a non-tallow formula since there are many superb non-tallow soaps, e.g., Martin de Candre, Calani, Klar Seifen, Pre de Provence, Dr. Dittmar...the list goes on. The truth is, at least for me, tallow or not, the new GFT soaps are lacking in performance.

I bought a bowl of the reformulated Trumper's Rose in April and think it's a great soap. It's #2 on my favorite list, just behind Harris. Trumper soap really took a beating in this thread. Maybe that turned off a lot of people. I know I held my breath when I ordered mine. I haven't seen much mention of Trumper soaps since that thread. Hopefully more members who have purchased the reformulated version will comment.

It's not great but decent soap. I still have rose and coconut but didn't care for the others. I think their creams are superior to the soaps.

Trumper is an enigma for me. I love the tradition while at the same time realising that nothing at Trumper is as it was one hundred years ago. Not even their old fragrances from what i gather from various forum postings. This is to be expected. Re-formulations are nothing new. If you have ever seen old photos of Trumper or the other Ts product lines it is obvious there have been continuous changes. Likely the same with every brand.

I have a cake of their allegedly tallow based formula in almond scent. I am guessing it is from the late 1990's. I find it no better than the Eurcis version I purchased a year or two ago when it came out. The older versions ingredient list is "shave soap base, soap base". And nothing else. I can practically guarantee you this soap was as different to something made in 1920 as the newer veg versions are to it today. I have come to the conclusion that British soaps like a certain type of water. If they like yours the lather can be superb. If not then mediocre results or worse are the norm. Unfortunately I fall into the latter category. It matters not whether it is Trumper, Truefitt(Which I thought excellent til I tried Franco veg soaps. No contest there.), or MWF. NONE of them work very well in my water. I think water is about the number one qualifier in just about any soap but the Limey brands are extremely particular to me. I will say the Eucris soap with its cocoa butter oil content is a bit friendlier to my skin than the almond. Okay, here is what I will do. I will drag out the almond one more time and see if I can get it to an acceptable level. I will report back.

Cheers, Todd

I have used 2 pucks of Coconut Oil and I have a bowl of Rose, Violets, and another puck of Coconut ready to go. I enjoy the lathers Trumper's provides, but there is better for less out there.

Agreed. The new version is not worth the premium price in my opinion. I grated half a puck into a dish and the other half into a shave stick tube. It made a huge improvement in the performance, but it is either too foamy or watery for my liking.
EDIT: I LoVe the lime scent though!!:em2200:

Buying any Trumper soap at the moment is hit and miss. Get a good one and count yourself lucky. I have a very decent Rose from 2008. Three months ago I ordered a lime. Absolute rubbish. I complained and they sent me a replacement Rose. Again, utter rubbish. Having the 2008 puck shows what Trumper was capable of, even with reformulation. Goodbye Trumper. You've seen the last of me!:thumbdown

The current corp of English manufactured tripled milled shave soaps clearly reenforce the statement " Caveat emptor" . My brush of choice with most of them has become my SOC and I don't see myself purchasing them again. For me MWF is the best remaining English manufactured soap and C&S has the good sense to have their soap produced in Italy. Italy, Germany, and France is where most of the soaps I enjoy are being manufactured.

I have a tube of the Trumpers Spanish Leather cream. I like it a lot. Wonderful scent, and pretty good lather. I must say I was a bit disappointed by the bowl of Trumpers Coconut Oil soap I broke out this summer. Perhaps it was simply a matter of not being able to live up to my high expectations. I had put it off for several months waiting for hot weather to arrive. I think the more I waited on it the more I needed for it to be exceptional. As it turned out it was good but not really exceptional. On the other hand, after that coconut scented shave I finished with Trumpers Limes skin food ... I smelled like a Pina Colada for some time afterwards.

I use it almost everyday. It has not gone by the wayside. Too many products for most gents to concentrate on a single line.

I'm in the process of finishing a puck of veggie Coconut that has been very good. I have no complaints about my puck. Somewhere or another I have a puck of veggie Rose that I will eventually get around to, and I expect it to be as good as the Coconut.

I have a newer puck of Almond which is pretty good. The scent is more woodsy to me though. But the performance is fine.

Interesting Q, since for about 15-20 years i used nothing but Trumper's in every flavor with my Trumper/Simpson brushes. Not so much by choice, but I stumbled across them in London and didn't know there was anything else, duh. Now that I have found B&B and switched from cartridges to DE razors (about 50 of 'em, lol), I wouldn't buy any of the GFT soaps or creams since I have discovered much better aletrnatives. However, I do confess to wanting to try the "skin food".

The only Trumper's soap I've tried is Eucris, and I like its performance. I think its a pretty good soap, I'm happy with it.

cleanshaved

I’m stumped
I have a puck of Eucris. love the smell and how it leaves my face just not the best lather.
mix the soap it with some Eucris cream and it comes out a winner.
