Is This Plating Loss?

Hi All,

I lurk here a bit but haven't really participated in the forums. Thanks to all for the wealth of information. I have been using an EJ89 for a few weeks now and decided to buy a Gillette FatBoy. I am really happy overall with the razor and case, they cleaned up really nicely and the mechanics are flawless.

My only concern is the spot on the head of the razor (see pic). Is this plating loss? If so, is there any way to restore it without having to have the entire razor replated? Thanks in advance for your answers!

I can't tell but if it were me I would try polishing it out or just clean it up a bit and shave with it as is.

It seems to have gone through the plating. If so, it cannot be polished out and full replating - at least of the silo doors - is in order.

Thanks for the responses. I do plan to polish it this week but I am afraid Jussi is right, that the plating is worn out. If I decide this razor isn't for me, how much would this affect the resale value? From what I can tell the razor and case are in excellent condition otherwise. Thanks again!

looks good to me

try some MAAS polish? i find it takes off many little blemishes like that, which soap and water can not.

either way, if that's the only flaw, you got a beauty.

That little spot won't impact that razor's ability to shave one iota. As long as the head hasn't been bent and the mechanical parts are all sound it will shave your face daily for the rest of your life and won't look much different after all that time with proper care. Vintage razors that were well cared for are pretty obvious. Yours looks pretty good. Superspeeds don't usually die, they are killed by being left with crud and blades in them to rot away in the back of a drawer. Cleaned well and and dried after use they are good for a lifetime.
