What's new

Is this normal?

I had a family friend give me a Gillette Slim, (2nd Q, 1964). Since I am new to DE....was strictly SR, I ordered a sampler pack from WCS and disinfected the Slim and got ready to shave. I loaded a Feather and was getting ready when I noticed a difference in the gap between the safety bar and the hinge side of the 'doors'. The gap narrows as you follow it from Left to Right and is replicated in the other side. I removed the Feather and tried an Astra....with the same results. I adjusted the razor through all 9 settings (while making sure to loosen the TTO before each adjustment. After each, I made sure to lock the razor with the additional 1/4 turn.

As I new to DE, I wanted to know if this is normal or fixable.

Not normal. This razor will make your introduction to a DE memorable, but not in a good way.

BTW, welcome aboard B&B.

doesnt sound normal to me, I think you should avoid loading the feather for now.....but it's a mighty fine razor, one of my favorites

+1 Good luck with the fix.

Luck must have worked! Used some small nippers to get a good purchase and took my time. After about 30min. of slow progress, the Slim lives!

Did my first DE shave afterwords and enjoyed the hell out of it. The razor ran great, not cuts or nicks. I think my straight razor experience made this an easy transition.

The Feather worked great with my Kells Bay Rum.

Congrats on the fix - patience is always a virtue when razors are involved!!

The Slim is a great performer - enjoy your shaves!!
