What's new

Is this insane?

I like to dabble. I like custom things. Always have. I was cruising about on the internet when I came across an eHow on making your own aftershave. I looked up the ingredients on google and while looking for the scents, I found literally hundreds of different essential oils to choose from.

Excitement ensued.

Currently I am imagining myself as some modern day apothecary mixing and blending some of these interesting scents to make my own specific blend of aftershave.

First off - is the idea of dabbling in this arena insane? I'm looking at costs of essential oils vs eventually finding a store bought aftershave that fits me. Any thoughts?

Second - Has anyone dabbled in this at all? Share any stories if you have some. I'm interested!

Thanks!

Eye of newt, powdered bat wings, and a cauldron of boiling oil...
What kind of potions are you creating??? Muhahahaha...
But seriously, have fun!
Mike

No experience in home-growing A/S... But interesting. I guess it's not too difficult to create a basic-A/S. Experimenting with different ingredients will leave you with A LOT of A/S, maybe you could try selling it?

... no link to the ehow tutorial? You've piqued my interest here

Not insane at all. In fact, I think its a wonderful way to go. I experimented with mixing my own with great results. You can custom tailer a mix to your spec.

Good luck, let us know how it goes

You are not insane at all. On the contrary you are totally normal and apparently a very enterprising, creative guy. Who knows what great things you may come up with. There are now several web sites offering great products which were created by regular folks like you in their basements. . . .specifically check out the offerings on The Shave Den in its Store section . . . Or St. Charles Shave which offers the very best products around (check out the ratings on B&B). I'm hoping you'll keep us posted on your progress.

Sorry Gents. Here's the link for making aftershave from the eHow site:

Also, if anyone has similar interests in making/experimenting with making their own shave soap:

I've scouted the intar-tubes for the best deals on essential oils. My best leads were found on eBay.

For scenting properly, I've been looking at the http://www.basenotes.net site. They have a lot of reviews where people describe the combinations of scents found in certain colognes and perfumes. I plan on simply finding some scents I already like and getting the essential oils for those particular scents.

I'll keep everyone updated on any progress.

Oh - as a note. Be very cautious with anything you find on eHow. I believe they go under a slightly stricter policy of submission than wikipedia, but it seems that a lot of these articles are written by people who *might not be experts*.

Research into aftershave making should be something you do until you feel comfortable. Just yesterday while researching essential oils, I found an asterisk next to the scent I was thinking about buying (bergomot). It stated that the essential oil could become toxic if exposed to the sunlight.

This could be a problem for those who dwell above ground . . . :001_rolle Obviously the essential oil is sold for a variety of purposes, and not just for mine :001_huh:

So if anyone would like to experiment with this idea, just make sure you research carefully :001_smile

By the by, they do make an bergomot version of essential oil that is not photo toxic, but the description must state that expressly!

Remember, this stuff is going on your freshly shorn skin - it gets absorbed!

I say do it if that is what you want to do. It could be fun. The worst that can happen is you spend a bit of money and smell nice. Who knows, maybe you can become an aftershave mogul, complete with a buyout from Proctor and Gamble.

So I've decided to give an Irisch Moos knock off a try. I was checking out their website yesterday and they listed out quite nicely their different scents that make up the cologne.

Bergamot, lemon, orange, rosemary, coriander
Lavender, cedarwood, geranium, clove
Patchouli, Moss, Tonka Bean

Does anyone know where I can get a sample or similar of Real Irisch Moos? I'm having a hard time locating it. I do remember someone on the forums having a link to a place that sold it, but have been unable to find the link again.

Thanks!

Germany. Seriously, all US vendors are having a time getting it. Try here: Super Lather

So I've seen Irisch Moos on many German websites - what is the reason that I couldn't buy directly from them? I've heard rumors about sending things with alcohol content through the mail being the issue, but how then can I get a domestic decant? I think I'll purchase the decant and go from there.Wish me luck!

Also - this is a kind of stupid newbie question, but I might as well get it out - what is the difference between Irisch Moos A/S and Irisch Moos EDT?

I love Bergomot :) I once smelled all the EOs at a store with, what seemed to me, a large selection, and that was my favorite.
