Is this Gem a good shaver

I just bought this yesterday off the bay for a bin price of $4.00. I have been hearing how wonderful the Gem shaves so I thought I would give it a try for as little money as possible. Does anybody know what vintage this one is and if it will give a good shave. I'll post a better photo after I get the razor.

OldGuy,

I have a Micromatic that I have used a few times. It is indeed a good shaver but is more aggressive than the 1912.

Micromatics are hard to date. From that view it appears to not be an open comb (probably a Clog-Pruf) so that would make it a little milder than a typical Micromatic. It could be as old as mid-30's or as new as early 50's, I think.

My Micromatic works very well for me. Start with very little pressure and progressively angle the head until you hear the whiskers being cut.

Thanks DL. The only thing I know about the Gem is what I read on this forum. With the exception of one Schick injector, I use Gillette razors exclusively. I like trying different razors all the time and have used 15 different ones in the past month. I just want to try a Gem. Is it the same as an Ever Ready? I have heard of the 1912 model Gem but I guess you have to know what to look for to find one. I'll start looking.
Thanks,
Len

You got a very good price for that razor in a case and all!
Personally I prefer the more modern contour to the other gems, but all the gems are popular here.

I have the same model. It shaves well but I prefer to use carbon steel blades in it. I generally strop the blade after a test pass. The micromatic is a nifty razor in my book.

I've tried several different models of GEM's and have not found one that isn't a good shaver. Micromatic...4.00 with case...

This is a safety bar and not an open comb. It rates between an open comb and a 1912. The bullet is the mildest and I would like another opinion besides mine about the featherweight. Probably you could get very good information about that razor from 1OLDGI.

It looks like a Clog-Pruf Micromatic. I suspect that it's from the mid to late-30's. You'll get good shaves from this one. Good score. Clean it up and give it a go.
