Is this a reasonable price for this #66 British Aristocrat Coronation?

EDit> no live ebay links please
I'm only in the beginning stages of my addiction but since the beginning I've found the #66 British Aristocrat incredibly alluring.

As I understand it there were 2 versions of the Coronation sets. An aluminum one and a rhodium. I heard that the rhodium one was the better quality and rarer one. Is that the case?

But is this a decent razor for that price. I'm asking for more pictures of the razor itself just to check it out and if it's all good I might go for it.

I doubt I could spend much more than the asking price but I've wanted one so badly and this is the only one I've found.

I wish I still lived in England so I could scour relatives houses and antique stores for one.

If you're serious about this razor, I'd definitely ask for the additional pictures.

Honestly, if you're early in the collecting game and uncertain about whether to get this or hold out for a rhodium plated model, I can't imagine spending that much with this much uncertainty.

The seller hasn't much eBay history: 3 positive sales of (expensive) plastic action figures.

that's A LOTof $$ for a lightweight razor. that's a lot for any razor. In the description he says 1.) it's never been used 2.) there's a blade in it. Isn't that odd? "Never been used" means I should be seeing old yellow packing oil on it and no blade anywhere near it. At a cheaper price who cares? but @ $350... think of the Penhaligen's you could buy.

Those are all good points Chris.

These are beautiful razors. If you want one to use, this is not the one IMHO. If it is as near mint as they suggest, probably should be tucked away in a display case collection. Either way, that's a lot of money.

I nearly bought one recently. Razor in very nice used condition, case a bit spotted and not nearly as attrative as this one, missing the blade case. Listed at $199 BIN, I submitted a best offer (also offered in the ad) of $125. They countered with $150. I let the counter expire, then offered $130. They countered with $150. Again. I very nearly bit, was still weighing the choice, when I got a notice it had sold. They accepted a best offer from someone else for $185.

There was another that I bid on, a benefit for the British Heart Foundation. I was the second high bidder, it sold to another Member here for $114.53 (a gift from his wife actually, here's a link to the closed auction)

Really up to you, and what you're after. If you want as pristine an example as possible, to be as near new in a display collection, this may be the one for you. But if you just want a #66 and are considering this one because you're frustrated about finding one, I'd suggest you reign in the emotion and wait for a better deal on a shaver grade razor. I'm confident we'll both be able to find one that suits us eventually.

OTOH, I may not be the guy to listen too. I was just out bid on a 100 year old Pocket Edition I'd been watching for days. Really wanted that one. But I was straining to put a bid on it in the mid sixties. Sold for $111.

Thanks for your service!

If this set had papers and a shipper I could see it selling for this price as a BIN and listed for 30 days. As Chris already mentioned there are some things I don't like about this auction.
A new seller
A starting bid of $350
A new razor with a blade in it ?
Plus if you live in the US the shipping is another $25.
No insurance.
If you plan on shaving with it, this one is not the one.

But if you have to have it, go for it. If you were my son and I knew you really wanted it, I'd get it for you.

Good Luck,
Len

Thanks for all the input. To clarify it was more for display than using it that I wanted it and it was a Coronation I wanted in particular.

However, you all raised very good points and I think I'll keep holding out until I see the right one.

Thanks again.

Oh and Len, you can always adopt me

I'm fairly certain both versions are rhodium plated. Lightweight vs. standard, there aren't any visual or plating difference other than their base material. I also think the aluminum version is less common, judging by the amount that show up on the BST.
