What's new

Is this a Frankenrazor?

I bought this razor as part of a larger lot. It appears to be an older gillette NEW head (although I'm not even sure of that) with a Fat handle tech barrel. I have seen the combination before, but not with this particular head.

Thanks, Jason

I checked achims website and couldnt find this head in the tech section so going with what i know so far id say its a frankenrazor.

It is a mismatch or Frankenrazor, but it is a great combination.

Very often the Old Type handles split or otherwise failed, and the Fat Handle that came with some Tech razors was a perfect replacement to use the Old Type open comb parts with!

Are there any marking on the head, it looks similar to a Fatip.

The only markings are on the underside of the rake piece. The bottom left corner has the standard Gillette Trademark in a diamond. The bottom right says "Made in the USA"

Well, knock me over.
The base plate appears thicker than a standard old type, <sigh> I'm still learning.

I thought so, but I'm pretty new to vintage razors.

I agree, I dig the razor. I still haven't shaved with an open rake, but plan to eventually.

They did get thicker after the New Improved came out and the Old Type was demoted to the cheap seats. Here's a side-by-side comparison that Achim put together a while back:

I have 3 of these Old Type with Fat Handle, obviously their previous users had a liking for the grip provided by the fat handle and the Old Type head. However, it's a great combinasion and shave very well.

The early 102a heads were thinner, the later thicker 102b Old Types were made for cheaper razors, until they were replaced by the common Bar handle NEW which was replaced as the entry level budget razor by the Tech razor.
The NEW razor came out when Gillette stopped 3 hole blade for the center bar, the NEW and the Tech Share the same cap except for last Techs which don't have center bars in the cap.
