Is there a way to keep the decal?

I got a nice straight and I like the decal on the blade. Is there a way to restore the blade without removing the decal? I'm assuming that a blade with pitting spots will need sanding and only sanding can remove those spots. Sanding might remove the decal also, any thoughts?

Pictures to follow if required!

Here we go. I'm not even sure of the word in there... I should revive the Russian straight thread (Yes, that's a Stiz) :001_rolle

Should I use chemicals instead to clean the blade?

IMO, the rust is too bad. However, you might be able to save it using the tumbler method. I'm sure someone in your city has a tumbler. Apparently they're more common than I think.

It could be photographed and/or laser/acid etched. IIRC, Traveller over at SRP has done this before. I think Joe Chandler has also. My guess is that it would be expensive.

Thanks for the information!

I will keep looking but I might send this one to be restored... I'm unsure yet. I would love to keep the design on the blade but I guess you can't have everything all the time...

Though it a shallow “frost” It can be saved, and look original as from factory… but it’s a lot of work, and only worth it if it’s a heirloom or something special, otherwise you may want to go the tumbler rout.
I don’t have much experience with tumblers, but I believe when finished it will look different but still there… better than sanding.
